Bluetec only exists for the 3.0L V6 right now (for MY09+) if I'm not mistaken. Is Bluetec even going to be implemented in Europe?

Not to mention that once people see trend-setters MB and BMW utilizing diesels in greater numbers, they will naturally flock to it.

This is a great thing for MB! I hope we get it here.

One of the bigger things for diesel, at least in europe, is that the diesel is often less expensive than the near equivalent gasoline engine. Even if it is just competitive, at least it is not an increase in price to get the mileage. Diesels also have a reputation of running a very long time without requiring a rebuild, unless you are GM and do something incredibly stupid like just change the heads on a gasoline motor and try to make the customer think he is getting a purpose built diesel. At least until the engine blows up. Finally, it is no longer much of an advantage with all the other electrics in the car but diesels being compression ignition don't need a spark to run which simplifies their operation and increases their durability - the reason why diesel engines are a desirable upgrade over gasoline in things like auxiliary engines in sailboats.

Correction: It's 43.5 US mpg or 52.3 UK mpg. Still very impressive nonetheless.

Wait. On the second thought, it's not that impressive.

According to the the latest US national average fuel prices, regular gasoline costs $3.389/gallon while diesel costs $4.059/gallon, which is 19.8% more than the cost of regular gasoline. This means that the Camry Hybrid, which gets a combined mileage of 34 US mpg of regular gasoline, really is equivalent to 41 US mpg of diesel. Incidentally, the Camry Hybrid does 0-60 in 7.7 seconds too! Add in the fact that the Camry Hybrid is a larger car than the C-Class, I'd say this new diesel from Mercedes-Benz has finally equaled the Toyota's HSD in terms of fuel cost savings.

Good for the national fuel averages. Here in NoCali, gas is 3.80/3.90/4.00 and diesel I have seen is around 4.15. So it depends somewhat whether you are comparing to regular or premium and where you are. Diesel is at a disadvantage but more in the 5 to 10% range here right now.
