Post Mercedes-Benz unveils new four-cylinder diesel lineup, 204hp 370 ftlb 46mpg

Mercedes-Benz announced a new range of four-cylinder diesel engines today, reiterating their focus on reducing engine size while maintaining performance. The new lineup delivers better economy and power levels than Mercedes’ previous generation of four-cylinder diesel engines, with the most powerful variant delivering 20% more power and torque than the outgoing powerplant.

The range topper is a new 204hp 2.1L unit with a peak torque of 500Nm – as much twist-force as a petrol V8. Despite the increase in power and torque, the new four-cylinder diesel burns substantially less fuel than its predecessor and as a consequence CO2 emissions are reduced by as much as 13% and are now in line with future EU5 emissions standard.

The extra performance comes from several tweaks to the injection and common-rail system, now in its fourth generation, as well as an increase in fuel pressure, higher turbo boost from new twin-stage turbochargers, more efficient intercoolers and exhaust recirculation and improved fuel and water pumps.

The new engine lineup will initially be offered in the C-Class sedan. It will come in three guises: 250CDI with 204hp, 220 CDI with 170hp and the 200CDI with 136hp. There are also plans to put the engine into SUV’s, as well as install it in hybrids and possibly combine it with Mercedes’ BLUETEC technology. The top of the line 250CDI will accelerate from 0-60mph in about 7.7 seconds and still return fuel economy of 46mpg.

Wow, thats some good power to still be able to get 46mpg. thats a really good torque number for a 4 cyl. Probably very useable torque too, not your hi-revving honda torque.

i'd be interested, actually with the gas prices anything that would give me 46mpgs would interest me

0-60 in 7.7 and 46mpg... now thats a pretty impressive combination. Not exactly fast, but not terribly slow. Up until now, if you wanted that type of fuel economy... you'd need a downhill slope or possibly a cliff to get that kind of acceleration.

I gotta admit, I was wondering if that 370 figure was a typo.

7.7 seconds and 46 mpg. I'm skeptical. I understand that this is updated technology, but for comparison a Jetta TDi gets low 40s during highway driving and it takes 11 seconds to hit 60 MPH.

7.7 seconds to 60? C'mon, my nearly decade old Camry Solara runs faster than that!

Seriously, I'm a bit skeptical as well. I'll believe it when I see it, but it sounds impressive so far...

Sounds like a great engine. Sure beats the one pumping under my hood at the moment.

The 7.7 second time is most likely underrated as is usually the case with Mercedes' acceleration figures. At any rate that isn't a slow 0-62 mph time at all.

What impresses me the most about this engine is the torque rating. 500 Nm from 2.1-liters? That's 233 Nm per liter! That is the highest torque figure I have ever seen in a stock car!

For your information the BMW 535d has 194 Nm per liter.

skepticism? look, they changed the higher range of the torque curve so it has GENERALLY the same engine load as the jetta at speed X, while giving it more torque at higher engine speeds. so lets say 60 mph. The jetta might get a little less in reality, but let's say they're both the same 44 MPG at 60 mpg no road gradient etc etc etc etc

the reason the jetta is less quick is because the torque curve drops more than the new MB-made engine, in question.

if that doesnt make sense, that's because you simply do not know enough about how fuel efficiency and fuel economy work. hell, if you dont know the different between those two things, i would wager you do not know.
not that you can not ever learn, but you just do not know. i could explain, but you would have to be more open minded and willing to put your mind through some gymnastics. just email me.

You for real?

There is a growing demand for diesel-powered cars in the United States. Slowly but surely this market is growing as more people wake up and see the benefits and positives of owning a diesel-powered car.
