You can probably get the base Corolla XLE for the same price as a base Scion xD...
Good point, but it depends on the options.

An automatic Corolla XLE starts at almost 19K ($18,860). An automatic Scion xD starts at less than 16K ($15,900). True, there will be at least some discount on the Corolla, but the amount the dealer has to play with (between wholesale and retail) on Corollas is traditionally small, so they usually don't sell for much of a discount....maybe 5% at most. That sure won't cover the basic $3000 price difference between them, even if the Scion sells for full list.....and then you have to consider the charges for freight, options, and state tax, which, of course, will apply to each car.

Tough choice, I havent seen the new xD's in person but they seem pretty decent online. You mentioned the xD being 17k even, how does that compare to the Fit?

For those who think the corolla might cost less than the xD...doubtful, those corollas are tC prices with half the options.

Thanks again for all your opinions guys!

I brought this comparison here because I know that most of us would be unbiased. Certainly not a good idea to bring this question to a Fit or xD forum, lol.

I won't be buying for a few months at least but I love to do a ton of research on cars and I enjoy other peoples opinions.

My budget is very small and I just have a new found love for sub-compact cars (gas prices have a little to do with it ).

So I know if I'm going dirt cheap, a pretty much base Yaris sedan will be my choice for around $13,900. If I can move up a couple grand, then xD and Fit are the contenders. So any car over $16K is out of the question.

For those that have only seen pictures of the xD, then hold judgement until seeing one in person - much better! It has the most presence I've ever seen in such a small car.

Official MSRP's........

Fit Sport...$15,270 (stick) / $16,070 (auto)
Scion xD...$14,550 (stick) / $15,350 (auto)

This price difference is fairly significant in this segment (but doesn't dis-qualify the Fit for me). It is especially suprising since the xD offers a handful more of standard features plus 20 more HP and much better speed.

Talking about speed, did you guys know that the Fit is the second slowest car currently available? Only the Smart Fortwo is slower to 60. Again, not a deal breaker but certainly something to think about.

You sure? What about the HCH-II and the Jetta TDI? I'm sure they're slower than the Fit. The Fit (according to that Youtube video you posted) did 60 in 9 seconds. That's pretty good for a 1.5 litre car.

The auto is tested at 0-60 in 11.9 seconds. I'd think about getting the manual anyway which should scrape off about 2 seconds.

wihich ever car you chose, definitely get the manual. These cars just don't have the HP for an automatic (you'd have to floor it constantly)....plus the stick makes them a little more fun to drive + better MPG, unless you sit in bumper to bumper traffic.

I got those prices on Edmund's. And the xD is new for '08, so it can't be last years. Not sure why Scion.com is showing different.
