DEARBORN, Mich., May 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Ford's new Focus
continues to defy gravity -- and the U.S. economy -- with a 88 percent jump
in retail sales versus last April and the highest total Focus April sales
since 2000.

"Focus is the right car at the right time," said Jim Farley, Ford group
vice president, Marketing and Communications. "This is the little car that
delivers in a big way for customers, with outstanding fuel economy, cool
features including SYNC, a fun drive and the right price, right along with
the rest of our newest cars and crossovers."

Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars achieved a 21 percent increase in retail
sales. While Focus was the standout, the company's mid-size cars also
posted higher retail sales. Ford Fusion retail sales were up 31 percent,
Mercury Milan retail sales were up 19 percent and Lincoln MKZ retail sales
were up 20 percent. The Fusion and Milan set April sales records with total
sales of 15,059 for the Fusion and 3,809 for the Milan.

Retail sales for the company's crossovers were 11 percent higher than a
year ago, paced by the Ford Edge (up 24 percent) and Ford Escape (up 13
percent). Retail sales for the Mercury Mariner were up 6 percent and
Lincoln MKX retail sales were up 4 percent.

Higher gas prices are accelerating the industry-wide shift from trucks
and traditional sport utility vehicles to cars and crossovers. At Ford,
April sales for sport utility vehicles were 36 percent lower than a year
ago and trucks were 19 percent lower.

Lower sales to daily rental companies (down 32 percent) also
contributed to the company's sales decline. Overall, Ford, Lincoln and
Mercury sales totaled 189,247, down 12 percent compared with a year ago.
Retail sales to individual customers were down 7 percent.

Total Ford Motor Company sales, including Jaguar, Land Rover, and
Volvo, totaled 200,727, down 12 percent.

Note: The sales data included in this release and the accompanying
tables are based largely on data reported by dealers representing their
sales to retail and fleet customers.

Lexus needs to push out the new RX faster. They're getting a bit too slow with the new model releases recently.

Also, BMW's 26,735 vs. Lexus's 23,350 marks the first month in many years that Lexus loses the sales crown. The margin the 5-series is leading is quite astounding.

BTW, for comparison purposes, Toyota is up 3.4% while Lexus is down 10.2% if the calculation were based on monthly sales and not on daily selling rate.

Lexus, Well clearly, that is the worst month Lexus has posted in maybe 10 years? Wow, down 17%.
I expected a drop, not that big though. Lexus has no new high volume product, the IS-F and LX are low volume cars.

The newness of the LS has clearly worn off. They only sold 200 more units than the S class and only 400 more than the old 7 series.

The IS continues to sell around the same pace every month. With gas prices rising, I see the IS 250 becoming more attractive to buyers.

Infiniti also down big, 11%, even with the new EX. The EX as I stated, will struggle, they didn't even sell 1,000 units. The G37 had a good month.

BMW has new product, the 1 and X6, combined for about 1700 new units. The X6 sold 655 units, the EX 949. So the much more expensive X6 only sold 300 less units. Wow.

5 and 6 series are up. The 5 series, you just have to bow down to it, it sells no matter the market, no matter what competition is out.

The sales crown this year looks to be in BMWs favor.

Jaguar, sold 1100 XFs! Not bad at all! Sadly the entire brand sold 1785 total. Total. TOTAL. Not sure why Tata would buy it unless they make it a niche only brand.

Benz, the C, GL and ML posted gains. Amazing how the 2 SUVs did, people still want their luxury SUVs. Seems the refreshes haven't helped sales much otherwise.

Lexus down 11% for the year so far. More than I thought.

Is the RX the only model that is getting a redesign in calendar year 2009? If so, even though the RX is a volume product, I don't see Lexus sales improving much in 2009 either.

Also, I read somewhere that they are killing off the GX. Is this true?

AFAIK, there are precious little rumors on the GX, and we still have conflicting info on whether the new RX is coming out this year or next. IMO, a new RX--as Lexus' best-selling model--could help things significantly. That said, this is a downturn market, and perhaps the suggestion that the 'practical money' or 'smart money' folks who buy Lexus are holding back, is holding true. Several years ago, BMW passed Lexus in YTD sales, but Lexus came back the next year(s). But with more product they have an advantage, and this year's Lexus drops are significant. Right now, one more month of BMW gains at the same pace and they are about even, or ahead. Looks like Lexus VP Mark Templin's realistic yet optimistic hope of "if we sell the same number as last year, I will be overjoyed" may not get reached.
