Perhaps because the R34 is a GREAT car - one of the best Japan has ever produced?

and it shouldn't have been this close. the m3 should've totally trounced it.
The M3 is powerful and fast, but as has been reported in several places, it's slide happy and you could see it a lot in the video - in a lot of corners the M3 driver is correcting coming out, losing a lot of speed. The Z just tracked in and out of corners very nicely.

I don't really know why the IS-F didn't do better - maybe the slush box.

The S2000 has great cornering too, but was just WAY too slow (less powerful) compared to the other cars so got trounced on any straightaway and powering out of the corners.

One issue with the M3 is its lack of torque. The M3 only has 295 ft*lbs of torque so it needs to run like a honda engine to keep the torque up. That is where the 335i wins over the M3. Plus, if you flash or tune the engine in a 335i than it will put out 400+ ft*lbs of TQ. That gives the car a totally different feel than a M3.

That M3 would have beat the 350Z by a lot more if it had started out ahead of the 350... so much of that race was spent with the M3 guy trying to cautiously pass everyone.

blah, blah, blah.... It is what it is.

Seeing is believing.

Unless I was looking at a different video... This was a R A C E! And I'm sure the drivers knew they were being recorded. That said... If I was being recorded in said race, I would try my best to win! I believe these guys were doing just that.
Give props were they're due.

It was a dumb test. The M3 and IS-F have way more power and cost way more than the Nissan and Honda. At least get a GTR and NSX to play...
