Exclamation ZR1 Chief Engineer: "GT-R won't be king of the ring for long"

The Nissan GT-R's 7:29 lap record won't stand for long if Chevrolet has anything to say about it. Speaking with InsideLine, Corvette Chief Engineer, Tadge Jeuchter, says that the ZR1, "will be able to take the production-car track record at any racetrack," and that although Chevy doesn't have a production version of the uber-Vette at the Nurburgring yet, they're expecting a lap time of "seven minutes, twenty-something seconds." That sounds like smack-talk to us. But while the ZR1 might have the potential to best the GT-R's 'Ring time, the 550-600 hp elephant in the room is the forthcoming GT-R V-Spec, which is already putting down (roughly-timed) laps around the North Loop in the 7:25 realm. Let the battle begin. We're making popcorn now.

That's a pretty bold claim but then again it's not just any car, it's the ZR1

I wonder what would LF-A engineer say then . . .

In terms of looks, I still prefer the C6 over GT-R . . .

LOL, not my sig!

Yeah, after seeing both in person, they are both superb to me. THe ZR1 looks a lot more like a sports car, very low to the ground and the big brakes/carbon fiber bits loook great.

The GT-R looked great too, much bigger but very original to see.

I think its great both are so capable and fast. Its also more "Ring" whoring that is ruining good competition, as fanbois from both sides are going nuts on other forums, lol.

Personally, I think it's a much worthy competition than saying "I have more hp than you".

They wouldn't say anything. They'll just bring it and if it beats them than they have that quiet smirk on their faces.

"The Lexus LF-A. It's what makes a Lexus not a Lexus." *tire smoke, V10 scream*

Right. Like just owning the car will let you cut a sub 8 minute lap at the 'Ring. Sure. I want to see this in person...the vast majority of the owners don't possess a skill set anywhere near capable enough to drive either of these cars at even 80% of their potential.

I suspect the ZR1 will take it. The Z06 already was the king of the ring for a long time - not literally but the next best time from a production car was the 250k dollar Porsche Carrera GT, so by all means it's the king of the ring to me since I'd never dream of being able to afford that Carrera GT.

I am starting to wonder about Nurburgring times, though. They're becoming so commonly cited as the ultimate comparison stat, and yet there's almost no series of checks or balances to keep, say, Nissan from bumping up the turbo boost on the GT-R... making it run a great time, and then letting the buzz and hype spread the word all across the internet.

I'm starting to think it'd be a really good idea for maybe a show like Top Gear or one of the magazines to start doing their own independent and verified legitimate 'gring' testing.

I doubt if LF-A will be much more than an M6 competitor, at best. It's a Lexus, so we know its going to be packed with luxurious crap, and weight as much as a small country. Not saying it's a bad thing, but don't be expecting a purebred sports car either.

I say let the challengers come and boast and see if they can knock the computer controlled robot off the pedestal. I seriously think Nissan's GTR platform won't be defeated by any mere RWD competitor. Its going to take a serious effort to build an AWD supercar to take out the GTR and V-spec. Haven't we already seen other competitors weeping by the road already?
