Default Human cadavers used in GM crash tests

Human cadavers were used in automobile crash tests conducted in the last year by General Motors, the US-based parent company of Swedish car manufacturer Saab.

Claes Tingvall, a car safety specialist with the Swedish Road Administration (Vägverket), told the newspaper Expressen that GM recently finished a multi-year research project in which dead human bodies were used.

“For certain things, it’s important to use cadavers. [The tests] involved people who had donated their own bodies,” Tingvall told Expressen.

He explained that the bodies were used in experiments meant aid further development of crash test dummies and investigate the injuries sustained by human bodies in car accidents.

According to Tingvall, a total of ten cadavers were used in the GM project, and that Saab automobiles were likely involved an account of the brand’s association with safety.

“It’s a part of the [GM] family where everyone partakes in the research results,” he told the newspaper.

Neither GM or Saab acknowledged any tests involved dead human bodies.

“We are with GM through thick and thin. We conduct our own research and try to find other methods to achieve our results, with the help of computers, for example,” said Saab spokesperson Christer Nilsson to Expressen.

As long as they have the consent of the deceased, I don't see what's wrong with this practice. It's no different from bodies used for medical research.

I'm fine with it as well. As long is it was legally donated bodies I see nothing wrong with it.

I agree as long as there was a proper consent given for this, I don't see a problem with it. The human body is the most complex machine (although I've had computer programmers tell me its nothing more than a fancy computer...) ever imagined and its tough to simulate what would happen to a human without using a real one sometimes.

Can't see how this is any better than using real dummies. Are they even flexible? Some people will do anything to ride in a new car.

Nothing new. Cadavers were used early in the crash-test life cycle. Eventually they switched to dummies cause you can't expect to keep using cadavers. They only can be used once then disposed of whereas dummies can be reused over and over.

I'd like my body to be mangled in a Pagani Zonda S.

That's the only situation I think where my mother-in-law would be quiet in a car.

oh my gosh. this poor thread has turned into sarcasm. hahahah so funny. but i totally feel that this is a fine practice. but how weird are these specialists.. who wants to touch a dead body and position it correctly into a car... ew wtf. why not just use a live person. tons of people would do it. and they can position them own darn selves.
