worst trends in car design?

Most 80's domestic cars, i'd say.
Something unflattering about driving a car that looks like 3 big boxes (rectangle) put together.
And i totally get you on the port-holes....i saw them on a sentra yesterday at home depot...YUCK.

I vote for the current trend in fake side vents oval, diamond, and retangular shape on civic's, f-150's, Nissan's just about everything, I recently seen a Licoln town car with the fake vents, along with a Mustang.

For me, three things stand out with today's cars....and are getting more and more common every year. Increasingly cheap, painted-plastic interiors, lighter-weight tinny doors that don't close solidly any more, and too much stiffness in suspensions and tires to the detriment of ride comfort. Much of this, especially the interiors, is due to simple cost-cutting. Automakers use cheaper materials hoping you won't notice....but I sure do.
And too many features are going into today's cars that IMO don't really need to be there...but some of that is government regulation that the car companies can't help....they are forced to do it.

I think most cars today are WAY too "chunky" looking. That's why even compact cars offer 17 or 18 inch wheels because the awkward, blocky bodies of most recent cars makes them look stupid with more reasonably sized wheels

Well said, I'd like to add that cars these days even compact cars themselves have gained a lot of weight. I mean seriously do we necessarily need tire monitor pressures, run flat tires, 5 to 6 airbags, other bells and whistles.
