Default Americans Crossing Border For Cheap Gas.

POSTED: 5:50 pm PDT May 13, 2008
UPDATED: 7:36 pm PDT May 13, 2008

SAN DIEGO -- Are San Diegans willing to cross the U.S.-Mexico border in order to save money at the gas pump?

NBC 7/39 reporter Consumer Bob Hansen ventured south to Tijuana to find out just how much money could be saved to fill up a gas tank.

The price difference between the two countries was hard to ignore. Hansen found that while California drivers are paying nearly $4 a gallon for regular gas, in Tijuana it's $2.75 at Pemex gas stations.

The difference in diesel prices was even more significant, Hansen said. The average in California is $4.71. But in Mexico, truckers are filling up for $2.10 a gallon.

"Well, it's $100 to fill this up in Point Loma where I live and it's about $70 bucks to fill it up here," said one driver. "If you come late at night, when there's no line -- where you may have to wait only 20 minutes -- then it's worth it."

But even locals admit when it comes to sitting in traffic for two hours, the trip may not be worth your time.

What about the quality of the Mexican fuel?

Hansen spoke with a variety of San Diego mechanics who have shops by the border and they said they haven't seen any unique problems from cars that get their gas from Mexico.

Wow that's a big difference in price in price. If I lived within reasonable distance I would go there late at night to avoid the rush.

having lived in La Jolla for couple years, for me to drive like 45 mins down to TJ to fuel up my car, that's pretty retarded concept in itself.

but for people that live around the border, i guess it's not bad if you make your living from driving where being cheap actually make a difference

Just ask Lexmex, our recently returned ambassador to the land of mañana, about the fine gasoline products available south of the border. I imagine he has a tale or two about the real costs of running that stuff in a modern engine.

I'm just wondering about the octane in the premium down there, i've always pumped their premium stuff, i wont touch magna (regular), but i hear it's 83, or 85 octane.

There is a Shell station in my commute that has premium at $4.65! At this rate it will be well over $5 in the summer.

Classic. All those exotic rules for CA gas thrown out the window, not to mention all the pollution from cars waiting to go through checkpoint Charlie TWICE to get gas.

Since I'm 2-3 hours from the border, I won't be driving down anytime soon to buy cheap, questionable quality gas. If I lived near the border, and had a beater as a DD, then maybe it would be worth it. Although sitting in border traffic for 2+ hours probably negates any benefit of saving $$, at least for me.

If it is like a 20 mile drive, hell yes I would do it in a heartbeat.

It would be kind of sketchy to go over there at night though, especially after hearing about the crime wave over there with the drug cartels and such
