well, I had a 250 for my first bike...I liked it; I wish I still have it, so I can put some real tires on it and take it to the track...or just for commute. But I wouldn't mind having the 08 250's. They look good IMO. I have a SV right now...I love it, plenty enough to keep put with an average jo with a liter bike. It's not about top speed, it's about technique when riding a sport bike. I was on a bike when I was 15. I don't think I wasn't a typical 15 years old.
but anything you do, please wear leather jacket, real leather gloves (not mech. gloves) ,a real helmet, and long pants when you ride. Would you rather bleed or sweat? Just don't become a statistics.

The technology on bikes are making them lighter, faster, and more efficient.
Therefore, you don't need something big to start. A big bike typically calls for a big ego, and you can't have that when you're learning to ride...
Overconfidence and ego will kill you on a motorcycle!

I thinking about picking up one of these.
Its a 2008 Yamaha WR250R. STREET LEGAL from factory. With a high performance and fuel injected 250cc 12,000 rpm 4 stroke engine.
I love dual sports. You can literally do ANYTHING with them.
I wonder which is faster, this Yamaha or the Ninja?

I bet the Kawi is faster, but the dual sport is quicker. Dual sports are geared really low, so they'll come off the line hard and get up to speed quickly, but their top end will suck (and you really don't want to ride knobby tires at high speeds on pavement anyway.) If you turned the dual sport into a motard - road tires and shorten the suspension a bit - it will out-handle the Kawi, but still won't out run it on top speed.
One of the most embarrassing things for guys on fast sportbikes is a 600cc single on a tight road. They'll walk away from you unless you work REALLY hard to stay ahead. The sad part is, even if you do manage to keep in front, when you stop, the guy on the 600 will still feel fresh and you'll be fried. Not like I've ever done any of that stuff though...
