Luxury auto brands again top J.D. Power rankings

Luxury brands Porsche, Infiniti and Lexus again were rated tops for quality in the annual J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Survey released Wednesday, averaging fewer than one defect per car.
But mainstream automakers such as Toyota, General Motors and Ford also had strong showings – a feat considering the increasing content of new vehicles and the financial pressures on the domestic manufacturers.
This year's industry average of 118 defects per 100 vehicles is a 6 percent improvement over last year, a "solid" increase, said David Sargent, vice president of automotive research at J.D. Power and Associates.
"This gain is driven not only by strong advances from many of the high-volume brands such as Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota, but also by very significant improvements by many other automakers," Mr. Sargent said. "From working with the industry, we see the importance that is placed on initial quality."

One thing is, in 2007 Lexus had no vehicles that were highest-ranked in the IQS, this year in 2008 they regained the podium with the LS and RX winning their categories again.
In 2007, Lexus had 94 problems per 100 vehicles, and in 2008 that increased to 99 per 100. Infiniti had 98, Porsche 87. Toyota improved from 2007 114 to 2008 104, which is technically tied with Mercedes this year.

I dont really care for these initial quality surveys unless you plan to own your car for 90 days or less. Quality issues may be year dependent too. First year cars still needs to have their problems worked out.

Then again, if you have a lot of quality issues in the first ninety days, you don't have much to look forward to.

Great showing for Inifiniti, and nice to see that Mercedes and Toyota are improving.
Most shocking to me though...Acura! Have they always been that low? How is there such a huge discrepancy with Honda?

Looks like the LS is still on top in spite of the "wind noise problem" experienced by some.
The LS also scored 99 out of 100, the highest of all cars in the latest Consumer Reports ranking of the Most Satisfying Car survey. Good show

LS did score that 99 in CR. But if you look at the charts it is the most recent model that got a black circle. Even the older ones didn't issues that are now starting to creep in. Of course, the boards here can round out the slip for Lexus. MB's improvement is also noteworthy. They still have a huge quality issue IMO but I have been hearing some stories of improvement. Before anyone posts about their neighbor, uncle, gf, total stranger, dog's experience with their new MB I am talking about larger trends. And it comes from declining reserves being needed for warranty issues at the corporate level. Of course, it could mean they just don't fix it but I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
