If you plan on keeping the AMG outside of the manufacturer's warranty period, purchasing an extended warranty is a must.

As said earlier, all of my problems have been electrical so far. Nothing major, sometimes my rear sunshade just won't go up and down. My radio has been acting up a little also.

Good luck on the search!

A friend of mine had an E55. While it is still one of my favorite cars of all time, I have to admit it wasn't very good as far as reliability goes. As others have stated, mostly non-drivetrain problems.

My advice, get a CPO one.

I had a friend with C55 AMD. Transmission was replaced multiple times. Electronics related problems were very common. I think Mercedes used to over-engineer their cars and then in the recent years they were under-engineered. It's just a bad design.

I remember watching some news report while in Europe about MB being grilled in the media for being most unreliable German-made cars while others weren't too far away in reliability.

Recent years? Its been over a decade since the mid 90s that they've had troubles. The overbuilt models lasted until the last 80s.

As far as the general reliability of Mercedes AMG vs. non-AMG models, most Mercedes problems are not engine or suspension-related, but usually come from electronics and hardware. So the probably won't be much difference in AMG vs. non-AMG reliabliy, with one important exception.....the unreliable and awkward electronic brake- activation system in some non-AMG models that, to my knowledge, have been dropped, and never were used in the AMG's, which either have Brembos or special AMG brakes.
While employed as a MBZ test driver 2000-2002 I very rarely found any imperfections in any new MBZ and they endured track testing better than most brands except the Porsches. I quit this job as the 2003 models debuted and the JD Power Initial Quality Survey numbers plumeted mostly caused by Command System complexity issues and the afore mentioned "electronic brake
system which I believe is being phased out. I worked a temp assignment spring of 2006 at the MBZ Vehicle Preparation Center to preform initial driving inspection of MBZ when they come off the ship in LA Harbor. Here again imperfections are rare. I believe AMG components are even more reliable than standard MBZ

My 2008 S63 AMG is good so far, 6k miles now, unlike my 2000 S500(sold at 6 months old), which had a few problems within first 6 months.

My wife just got a new S class. Where did you get the clear side markers. I can't stand the amber ones on her car.
