Exactly what I was thinking. There isn't really a comparable model against a Prius. If they are looking for a vehicle equipped with the non-hybrid version of the drivetrain... YARIS! Who knows what these people will come up with. I guess he just had to create an article to meet a quota

I mean if they compared it with the base model Corolla, and then try to say oh look you can save a lot of money by just going that route, but the base model Corolla doesn't even have simple things like power windows standard

Yep. The naysayers love to compare it to the Aveo. 1.6 litres and it still gets beaten by a Corolla in mileage. Heck, even the Mazda 3 isn't far behind.
