The new trend with companies advertising in their commercials on tv and radio and they say "31 MPG" instead of miles per gallon.
For some reason this urks me to death. Why can't you just say "miles per gallon"

In conversation, don't we all say "MPG" most of the time now anyways. Just like no one says "Sport Utility Vehicle" anymore. It's just SUV.
What bothers me though is how these companies advertise ALL of their cars as being fuel efficient. Big SUV's, everything. I see Silverado ads bragging about 20 MPG highway like it's efficient or something,
Too me, it's not efficient unless it's rated at least 35 mpg highway.

I talk cars all the time with friends and no one has ever said "emm pee jee" instead of miles per gallon.
Consider this - the voiceover announcers for the commercial are just reading ad copy. They're hired for the speaking talent, not because they know about cars.

cars have gotten heavier over the past 10 years (more safety features, added sound insulation, etc). cars are also making more power than they were before. HP wars have hit all parts of the market, and it's just now that companies are looking to balance the efficiency again.

For a commercial it is probably to get as much info in within 30 seconds. In TV, there are 30 frames per second. If a commercial is 30 seconds and 1 frame, we chop it off. Clients pay for 30 seconds, not 30.1 seconds. Anyway, most of the time its no big deal, but lately the trend has been to cut the commercial so tight that when you chop off that 1 or 2 frames of video you literally chop off the very last part of the audio. If it is a word, it is cut off.
