AUBURN HILLS, Mich., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler LLC today reported
total June 2008 U.S. sales of 117,457 units, which is 36 percent below the
same period last year. Total June sales reflect a continued contraction of
the market, especially of pickup trucks and SUVs, continued reductions in
fleet sales, and increases in Chrysler's newest highly fuel-efficient
vehicles. All sales figures are reported as unadjusted.
"The June results reflect the industry-wide impact of U.S. consumer
confidence being at its lowest point since 1992," Jim Press, President and
Vice-Chairman of Chrysler LLC said. "But Chrysler is fighting back and
making progress by continuing to invest in our products and aligning our
volume with the market.
"During difficult periods like this, it is critical that we continue to
evolve our products to meet our customers' needs and as a result, be a
stronger company when the economy recovers. Examples of this evolution are
our six vehicles that get 28 miles per gallon, and the 2009 Dodge Ram and
2009 Chrysler Aspen/Dodge Durango Hybrids with improved fuel economy,
innovative storage, and industry-leading Internet connectivity options."
Chrysler's Let's Refuel America $2.99 Gas Guarantee Plus Cash program
has been extended through July 31. The program continues to help improve
showroom traffic and drive sales of the company's most fuel-efficient
vehicles. For July, the program will offer the unique opportunity for
customers to lock in their gas prices at $2.99 for three years and get cash
back (on the majority of vehicles). The other two incentive choices offered
are cash back alone or 0 percent APR financing. Since the program began in
May, the vehicles in Chrysler's lineup with the highest gas program take
rate were the Chrysler Sebring Sedan, Dodge Journey, Dodge Caliber and
Dodge Avenger.
The Dodge Journey is making its mark in the crossover segment with
best-in-class fuel economy (19 city/25 mpg highway) and award-winning
seven-passenger interior utility. The Dodge Journey reached 5,162 units in
its fifth month of sales to become one of the most popular mid-size
crossovers in the market.
Compact Vehicles Growth
The all-new Jeep(R) Patriot posted sales for June with 4,889 units, up
6 percent compared with June 2007 sales of 4,633 units. Combined
year-to-date (YTD) total sales of the fuel-efficient Dodge Caliber, Jeep
Compass and Jeep Patriot compact vehicles which each achieve 28 miles per
gallon or better in highway driving, reached 114,188 units, up 18 percent
from YTD 2007 combined sales of 96,553 units.
Minivan Highlights
The Dodge Grand Caravan posted total June sales of 14,214 units, an
increase of 52 percent versus June 2007 sales of 9,342 units. While the
Chrysler Town & Country also saw strong sales in June with 9,833 units, up
21 percent compared with June 2007 sales of 8,151 units. Through June YTD,
new customer sales increased (retail only) 27 percent for Chrysler's two,
new long-wheelbase minivans, the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand
Caravan, compared with the same two long-wheelbase models last year.
Minivans remain a fuel-efficient option over large SUVs for transporting
seven passengers and cargo, getting up to 24 miles per gallon on the
highway (3.3L engine).
Despite slow industry sales, the Company finished the month with
440,075 units of inventory, or a 90-day supply. As part of a planned
reduction, inventory is down 9 percent compared with June 2007 when it
totaled 485,429 units.

Everyone's worried about the imports. I fear for the domestic auto manufacturers going the way of the dodo. We've had so many companies wrap up already. With America's manufacturing segment crumbling down to nothing, cars and planes are about all we had left. Scary thought.
You know what they say.......where GM goes, there goes the US economy. Oh well, this is Modern day America......no one really cares about anything.

It's still perplexing to me that some auto manufacturers reports % change by total volume, while others go with the % change by DSR. A quick glance at the numbers doesn't give you a good comparison.
For example:
Ford had a change in volume of -28.1%, but based off of DSR, that would be listed at -15.8%.
Toyota reports DSR of -11.5%, but that would be a -21.3% in change of volume.
Basically, Ford's -28.1% volume change looks horrific while Toyota's -11.5% DSR looks bad, but not that bad.
Also looks like from those reported sales, BMW is #1 for the month (20,944), Lexus #2 (20,253), with Mercedes just a step behind at #3 (19,576).

Big drop for Lexus, everything down but the limited production LX.
TOTAL LEXUS 20,253 28,869 -21.1 136,711 160,202 -14.1
Down 14% for the year. They are on track to break 300k units again but BMW has a very very good chance of taking the crown.
GS sales down to 1200 units last month, wow. RX had HUGE dip!
I expect Lexus will respond with some new lease deals.

Now with Lexus, unfortunatly, Toyota will have to go down with offering smaller engines in all of their Lexus's, to get better mpg accross the lineup. I say unfortunatly, because before, Lexus could be above others by only offering true luxury rides with larger engines, but that doesnt seem to be market reality anymore... GS250 and LS350 here we come (eventually).

As I've predicted, Audi will catch and pass Infiniti in the next 5 years with sales. They were very close last month. They cannot be happy with only 1000 sales of the brand new EX as that will only DROP in the next 5 years to insignificant levels. The new FX is not going to be a sales hit without their usual aggresive lease rates, useless SUVs is not where its at right now, people will make more logical choices and not emotional ones. The refreshned G37 won't help either as people begin really looking for economy, a G25 is needed but the car is so big for its class a 4 cylinder won't make it move out its own way. Their product planners basically continue to be average for the most part. Their launch in Europe will be hampered by the lack of diesels initially, YOU WOULD THINK, they would have saw how Lexus stunk in sales until the IS 220d and hybrids came along.
Onto Acura, more bad news, RL sales are insignficant and the refresh won't help. I believe its the first time the TSX outsold everything else (but 08s are still on lots), not a concern for the TL as that is on its way out but the MDX is only 2 yeras old and selling worse than the last one. The RDX is a huge miss for this brand and its small with not good fuel economy so its not going to get better. I suggest they sell a I-4 WITHOUT the turbos. So basically they have the new TL coming but it won't offer more economy (1MPG is not more) just more power and heavy AWD.
Lexus is also in trouble as the GS is floundering as the LS is, people are not buying and Lexus lease rates stink here. The IS/ES will do fine b/c the ES has decent economy and always has its target market and the IS has the 250 which will help tons. Imagine Lexus only sold the 350!!??!
Lexus trucks hurting, the LX is limited production and the new RX needs to come as the current one is getting late in its cycle. Lexus does have new lease deals for the RX (and IS/ES fyi). The next GX simply must offer a hybrid out the gate, I just don't see that SUV selling much next go round without something to make it stand out.
The Lexus hybrid won't be sold until 2010 or so, Lexus might not sell 300,000 cars in 2009 as they are on pace this year.
However, I firmly believe and we have heard Lexus has hybrids and other fuel efficient cars in the works as their product team/forecasters saw oil prices rising, thus Lexus will again have one up on its Japanese brothers in this market.
I bet they are glad they skipped the cute-ute market.

Strange about the RX/Highlander/Pilot/MDX - sales of those vehicles are way down. I expected people to stop buying Expeditions/Explorers - but not the smaller vehicles (of note the Pilot and MDX do not get any mileage awards and this may have something to do with it - however that total did include the NEW Pilot and the MDX was at .9% financing out here). I think people really are moving back towards cars - smaller ones at that.
Oh and the Lexus lease deals (at least out here) on the IS/ES/RX were screaming - so please none of this "Lexus does not offer lease deals" crap.
and TRD....remember Corolla has 10%+ in fleet sales

Tough month for everybody.
Just as I predicted, Civic loses it's #1 sales crown from last month. This month, the clear winner of the sales crown is the Corolla. Also, for the second month in a row, Ford's entire F-Series of vehicles was outsold by the Civic, Corolla, Camry, and Accord. Ford's Employee pricing for June did not help. Also shocking, but not surprising is that Focus sales are actually DOWN. Once you get past the gimmicks, the Focus is not that great of a car. Prius sales still look to be supply-limited, but I wonder what's going on with Yaris sales. Down this month, possible supply issue, or something else?
Toyota may be forced to ramp up incentives a bit closer to what the other major automakers are offering. Toyota's incentives are still very low considering the market conditions.
EDIT: looks like the Yaris drop *may* be due to the 08/09 model switchover, or possibly the previously mentioned supply issue. I do know Yaris sales in many international markets were very strong in May.

So last month the Civic which was the best selling vehicle in the US after many people complained about it when it was introduced in '06 and thought it would fail. Two months ago, people said the same about the new Corolla.
Now after only two or three months out, the Corolla becomes the best selling vehicle in the US. Crazy.
The Yaris is definately supply limited. I went to my local Toyota dealer (large high volume dealer) and there wasn't even ONE Yaris! In past months, they would have 15 in stock. It has to be the '09 transition.
