Anyway, more offerings of small cars are good.
The Versa is huge. It's almost compact in size so yeah you're not dreaming.

I drove the rental Yaris sedan 1200 miles over last weekend. It averaged 35mph on the hwy but the damn car was so unstable at 75mph and above. Just a little cross wind or the truck goes by and the damn car would jump a lane. It was down right dangerous! Taking a turn you would have to really SLOW way down. I've driven minivan and its handling is worse than a freaking minivan. I found the interior to be ok thought. I mean, what do you expect from the car in this price range. Hopefully they will improve its handling a bit.

Yep. First thing that's GOT to go are those idiotic center-mount gauges.

It's too high and narrow for optimum handling. All else equal, the higher the center of gravity, the more unstable the handling.

Low price range or not, the center stack gauges, IMO, are simply unacceptable....see my post above.

Yeah. They did upgrade the tyres for 2008. They fitted larger 15" wheels and I presume went from 175 to 185 width.

Why? That will only hurt fuel economy.

Stability?? plus 14" are getting a bit small in this day of "every car must have large rims". A Highlander has 20" rims for goodness sake!

I remember when I thought my 1992 Celica GT-S 15" looked mean.

My guess (and this is only my opinion, not necessary a fact), is that, besides the usual obsession today with more tire grip and handling response, the 5-door configuration will potentially accept more people and cargo than the 3 and 4-door versions. That means more potential vehicle weight fully loaded, meaning more tire is needed to support that weight. You also have to remember that the Yaris, like small Scions, is widely driven by young, inexperienced people who pay little or no attention to how they load up their cars and drive, checking tire PSI's, etc....

Yeah but you'd figure 14"s are better cause they're cheaper if the "kids" were to swap them out anyway.
