Default New Chevy Cruze Compact Coming to U.S. in 2010

GM announced today that it will debut an all-new car called the Cruze at the Paris Motor Show in October. The five-passenger car will be roughly the same size as Chevy’s Cobalt sedan and will be sold in European markets staring in the spring of 2009.

GM has confirmed with Cars.com that the Cruze will also be sold in the U.S. starting in mid-2010 as a 2011 model. It will be called “Cruze” here as well. A separate source has the Cruze being built at the same Lordstown, Ohio plant that the current Chevy Cobalt is assembled. There wasn’t official confirmation that the Cruze will replace the Cobalt, but that seems like a very good guess.

GM’s press release only said that the Cruze will carry on Chevy’s new design language seen on the new Malibu and Traverse crossover. We’ll see pictures and receive more information the closer we get to the Paris Motor Show.

Why would they replace the Cobalt? Its already got better highway fuel economy than Corolla, Focus, Civic.

Not quite so clear cut. ONLY the XFE Cobalt model gets 36mpg highway EPA, and it ONLY comes in a manual transmission. It's not available in automatic. Regular Cobalt models with automatic transmissions do not beat the Corolla and Civic's highway fuel economy.

Again an AMERICAN car company will release a model in foreign markets BEFORE releasing it at home.

Why does the "richest most powerful" country always get things last?

Just a guess, but I think it's easier to do a limited production run for a small foreign market than tool up a full production run of a brand-new product in the States. Small production bottlenecks and quality issues can be much more easily fixed at a a smaller scale when you are producing only a few hundred units per month.

Add to that the fact that the US market is very unforgiving of errors. A flawed design, assembly, or product will instantly be perceived as blood in the water, and the feeding frenzy will begin. For the major US automakers it is simply easier to open out of town.
