Default Spy Shots: 2010 BMW X1 SUV

Spy Shots: 2010 BMW X1 SUV

Posted on Thursday 10 July 2008

The next couple of years will be very busy for BMW as it launches a handful of new models including new versions of current top sellers and some models we’ve never seen before. The new X1, revealed in these latest spy shots, falls into the latter category, taking the carmaker into the compact SUV market currently dominated by the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

This latest set of spy shots are the most revealing yet of the upcoming X1 - the latest prototype shedding the heavy camo gear seen on previous test cars in favor or a more revealing skintight covering. The car’s running gear is based on the 1-series compact car but its ride height will be taller and BMW’s X-drive AWD system will also feature.

Engine options will range from a 145hp 1.8L four-cylinder petrol engine to a range topping 3L diesel. Transmissions will include a conventional six-speed manual as well an optional six-speed self shifter. Expect to see elements from the CS concept car make it onto the new X1 including an enlarged grille, wrap around headlights and an aggressive bumper.

Production is expected to top the 100,000 mark and will start at a BMW plant in Leipzig by the middle of next year. The X1 will be priced higher than the 1-series, likely starting close to the $30,000 mark. Much of the car’s components will also be shared with the upcoming Mini SUV to save on development costs, although the BMW model is expected to be significantly larger than the Mini.

Thankfully nobody will notice the camo and guess that this is a preproduction car...

oh man, could you imagine if you could actually order a fabric effect like that on your car! L O L

bimmer is a little rediculous i must say with the x1 & x6 ... remember when SUVs were for S & U? ... they could drive over things and go off road, and you bought one because you did S & U things ... now you buy one because ... um, ... uuhhh ... you ... nope i dunno, but i dont really get making an SUV that isn't really for S or U either

I love how the 1 series' price competes with the 3, and the X1 with the X3.

I dont get it, all compact SUV are cheaper. Yet people will pay more to buy a smaller car, when they can get another bigger BMW for the same money -.-

Oh god.. it's a mini X6. Sloped roofline = less storage space + less headroom.
Just terrible.

yea, ...

customer: "i like the x6, it's just too big and useful ... do you have anything else?"

sales man: "yes i do, it's called the x1, and it's even LESS useful than the x6"

c: "how so?"

sm: "you can only be friends w. midgets & if you want to take ANYthing with you its probably easier to ... well ... leave it behind, you can't take anything bigger than your purse in the suv really, and it is going to have to be a small purse"

c: "i have a dog, will he fit?"

sm: "is it a tea cup poodle?"

c: "yes"

sm: "then yes, anything bigger wont fit either"

basically what i'm saying here is: WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WANTS TO BUY THIS THING

Agreed. This thing sits low as a car. It's built off of a car platform (not truck), it's not going to tow much, it's not going to lug a lot of people or groceries. It's a 1 series wagon with a sloped roof line.
Let's make this vehicle more useless and let it only seat 2.
