Default Tint Question: 35% + 35% = ?

I was thinking about adding another layer of tint to my 35%. The 35% is nice but I want to go a little heavier so that you can't see the occupant as clearly.

Where I live the tint is illegal so I can't go 5% but wondered what would be the result of 35% x 2. Would that mean 17.5% light transmission (35% divided by 2)?

I think it would be 35% of 35% which would be 12.25%

I bet you are right. What would you say would be the tint on the RX330 or any typical SUV?

Do you mean the OEM tint? I think the one on my dad's car (Land Cruiser) is around 35-40%

My Chevy Blazer came with 20% tint in the rear passenger and cargo windows. I got the one that came with an untinted tailgate window, but I threw 5% limousine tint over the factory, making 5% in the rear and 1% down the sides. 35% in the driver and passenger windows, so it's legal in my area. Most places check the tint in the front (only ones on a truck that you need to follow regulations on here) every year for our "safety checks", so keep that in mind in case it's a similar setup in your area.

20% is pretty dark, but I can definitely tell that the sides are darker (1%) than the 5% rear window.

I won't tell you what tint to decide on, because, obviously, not everyone's eyes are alike, and not all states have the same tinting laws. But whatever tint you DO decide on, besides the obvious legality, also make sure you can see adequately at night. Remember, the more light that tinting blocks in the daytime, the more light it will, in most cases, also block at night.............when visibility is much more critical.

Very good point. It did take some getting used to at night, particularly when backing up at night. And if someone is in my blind spot without headlights on (again at night), it is harder to see them. I guess over the years I've gotten so used to it that I no longer notice how dark my tint is.

20% is pretty dark as it is though, if that helps with the OP's question. 35% seems so light in comparison when I drive the truck and car side-by-side.

If I had a choice I'd pick 20%. I think it is perfect. Before our state started to really crack down on tinting with the use of tint meters at all annual inspection stations and even the police, we all ran 20% or darker. I ran 20% for years and thought it was perfect. Dark enough during the day and not bad at all during the night. I had no problems at night. Since then though I stick to 35% as I don't want to get a ticket and have to rip my tint off. I find 35% okay, but pretty light.

Here in Ohio, legal tint is 50%, which sucks. On my old Lexus I had 20% all the way around, but I really don't want to get pulled over after having 3 drinks at dinner and end up with a DUI because my tint is too dark-so I think on my GS I'm getting 50% on the 4 windows, and 20% on the back window. The cops around here are real *******s when it comes to nice cars, especially those with tinted windows.

Also, check your city laws. In Ohio, cities can actually dictate their own tint laws. My hometown has a law that requires the tint to be 50% or lighter for ALL windows, even the rear.

hmm...i was wondering how the multiple layers % comes out to be. i have 3 layers of tint on my car...first layer is 70% vkool all around and 2nd layer is 50% front and 35% back, 3rd layer is another 50% front and 40% back. i have no idea what % i have right now...but i can tell you this...it blocks out A LOT of heat lol during 90degree days i have my a/c on low and at 72degrees and i feel no heat on my arms and stuff. here's a pic of what it came out to be...

doesn't look dark at all...if i calculate the front 70%X50%X50%=17.5% or so...but it looks more like 35% cuz it's not dark during the day. my windshield have 70% vkool too.
