Cadillac Escalade Hybrid Launch Underway

DETROIT, Mich. – The launch of the world's first hybrid applied to a large luxury SUV, the 2009 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid, begins this month. Achieving a 50-percent improvement in fuel economy in city driving, Escalade Hybrid arrives at Cadillac dealerships in the United States with an MSRP of $71,685. That represents a premium of only $3,600 over a comparably-equipped Escalade.

"In a changing marketplace emphasizing fuel economy technology, Cadillac is proud to be the only luxury brand offering a hybrid in this segment," said Jim Taylor, Cadillac general manager.

Escalade Hybrid features GM's advanced Two-Mode Hybrid technology, enabling EPA fuel economy ratings of 20/21 miles per gallon (city/highway). The hybrid system can operate the vehicle entirely on battery-electric power during idling or low-speed driving situations. Escalade Hybrid also incorporates Active Fuel Management technology that enables the Vortec V-8 engine to operate on only four cylinders in certain driving conditions to save fuel. Escalade Hybrid is offered as a total package, including nearly all available luxury and technical features as standard. The two extra-cost options are four-wheel drive and power running boards.

Well I guess if you absolutely have to have a giant SUV, this might be the way to go. 20/21 mpg is pretty decent for a massive SUV. Too bad the mpg numbers couldn't have been a little better.

better, if these are real world numbers this is phenomenal, normal driving with an Escalade you don't break double digits in city and on the highway 16-17 mpg is a high.

Patience. There is a new V8 coming. Should be more efficient than this.

I like the Escalade and considered it but it has such a thug rapper reputation.

If you drove 12000 miles a year and gas were $4 a gallon you would save $1100 a year (15 MPG vs. 20). Thus this would pay for its premium in a few years, and thats before factoring in any tax credits.

Hybrid owners state in focus groups they want people around them to know they are driving a hybrid.

That Hybrid graphic on the doors can be removed by the Cadillac dealer. It's on a clear bra type of material
