The new X5 has grown significantly in size, its much bigger than the RX, it is a 7 seater. I like the exterior compared to other BMWS and the interior IMO is comfy. Haven't had a chance to drive the new one but have the old one which REALLY surprised me for being such a good drive.
The RX 400h I've driven extensively in FWD and AWD forms and I first have to say get the AWD as the torque steer mixed with CVT was not a mix I liked. The X5 is a much more capable handler than the RX but that should only be found out in emergency situations. Anyone racing or hell speeding in a SUV should have their head examined.
The RX clearly gets better MPG and has the "hybrid" geek/eco factor that is very chic today.
For 50k you are getting a X5 with pretty much nothing in it, the RX is 50k loaded.

The RX is the ultimate mom's car, there's a reason why so many moms and their young kids use it. Very comfortable and accessible, user-friendly. The X5 is bigger and has better handling, if you want the added size and cost, it's a possibility. Although a new RX is on the horizon, the current model has been well-received and is still a good value proposition today, IMO.

The X3/X5, Cayenne, and Jeep SRT Grand Cherokee are all more aggressive than most SUV's, but still need to be driven with common sense.

Too much stereotyping here. Yes, the RX is a nice vehicle for soccer-moms, but it also a darn nice vehicle for ANYONE who wants quality, reliability, versatility, and AWD versatility combined with a smooth ride and nice interior. And that includes a lot more people than just moms........the RX sales figures prove that.

Yes, and you are also correct that those who like the RX's driving characteristics probably would not like the X3/X5....and vice versa. The X3, especially, is the antithesis of the RX in several areas, notably a much stiffer ride....the X5 less so. In fact, when the X3 debuted several years ago, some auto magazines complained about its excessive suspension stiffness (and they are used to stiff rides). BMW was forced to make some suspension changes in the following years...and the subsequent X5 was noticeably softer, although the heavier weight and longer wheelbase of the X5 helped smooth things out a little, too.
