Insideline: GS350 vs. Genesis 4.6
#76
It's the whole package that makes a lux car unless you're that stuck on a badge that you think the badge automatically makes or breaks lux car status.
The Genesis is a true lux car without the badge. Drive one and see... it's not just an Accent with leather on the dash.
The badge really doesn't matter to me and some other people. If you went and bought an LS430 in Japan it'd have a Toyota badge on it... did that badge make any difference in how much of a lux car it was or wasn't? Not to me.

Thats something people are not factoring into the price here.

its hard to express how i feel about hyundai. they just have too much pride, and it annoys me. they have the audacity to try and displace lexus. that bothers me.
and i know that most of it has to do with the "do it or die" mentality from the korean culture. i just feel they are shaking up the car world too much.
when people say "hyundai is the lexus of the 21st century", you have to understand that its not a repeat of history. lexus provided something that the germans could not: reliability, technology, luxury, at a lower price.
hyundai doesnt offer anything new but lower price. no added luxury options, no added technology, and still unknown reliability about the genesis.

i would say the LS400 was questionable back in 1989. did it have a track record?
toyotas weren't all that hot in the 80's.
i don't think they became know as a 'reliable' car until the 90s
maybe the reason it sold was that it looked better than this, at least:

You simply cannot compare truly what Lexus did compared to Hyundai and the Genesis. Lexus spent over 1 billion in the 1980s on the LS. They studied not just luxury cars but the way people people that buy luxury cars lived.
Mr. Suzuki, chief engineer of the LS was not to be stopped. The LS was the quietest, the fastest, the lightest, the most reliable, with the best MPG. The LS truly was a rare BREAKTHROUGH of a car.
No one successfully penetrated the Luxury market from Asia until the LS and Lexus came. NO ONE. The Maxima and Cressida simply were not luxury cars.
Lexus gave Hyundai the CONFIDENCE TODAY to launch a car like the GEnesis. The Genesis is not the first car to not have a luxury badge to try to break into the luxury market. What makes it incredible is maybe the name, its a HYUNDAI, which still conjures images of crap to many people, no matter how many gains they have made in years.
Mazda 929 and Millenia. Oldsmobile Auroa. Current Buicks. The current and new Nissan Maxima. Loaded Chrysler 300C. Toyota Avalon.
Those are just a few that tried and try to sell luxurious or near luxury vehicles without the badge.
The Genesis might be slightly above those efforts but its goal is the same. To try to steal luxury brand buyers into a non luxury brand car

Yes they are. They will make Lexus rethink their strategy. IMO Lexus will have to become a full line manufacturer to stay competitive in today market. Merc and BMW both offer very low entry level cars to the lineup and lexus does not. There are way too many alternatives to a lexus which there was not years ago. LEXUS IS UNDER PRESSURE TO BECOME LOWER PRICED
Yes it is not a repeat of history. There was a very big gap between Lexus/Mercedes/BMW and the rest back in 1989 and this gap has narrowed very very very close.
For example...cars like the current Nissan Maxima match lexus in styling, interior features, fit and finish, MPG etc but yet in exceeds comparable Lexus models in horsepower, performance, interior feature like a hard drive etc.
You no longer need to pay a premium for luxury and Toyota has not realized this as Lexus sales are in the tank.
No the Genesis doesn't but Lexus, Toyota, Nissan, etc don't offer anything else better...except for the hybrid.
Oh yeah....did I mention that Nissan offer a gig drive on their M and Maxima...where does lexus offer this on ES or GS?

I think the Genesis competes with the Accord EX-L V6, Camry XLE V6, Avalon Touring, Ford Taurus Limited, Chrysler 300, and Buick Lucerne.
It can't stack up with a Lexus or Benz, but it gives the above a run for the money. And Hyundai is going to flood the rental market with the Genesis as they do with the Accent, Sonata, and Elantra - the Koreans have a nasty habit of setting overly ambitious business goals, but they can't move as much product as they like and they result to fire sales.
And both Acura and Infiniti didn't have Lexus' brand penetration, Acuras were just LHD JDM Hondas, as soon as the hood was open, you can clearly see HONDA MOTOR CO., LTD. on the valve covers.

In a twist, our 7th-8th gen Accord is called the Honda Inspire in Japan, and the JDM Accord aka the TSX is also the Euro Accord - just that one is made in Saitama, Japan and the other is made in Swindon, England.

2. The new Maxima is very nice but what you are stating is opinion.
3. Most of your post is opinion "They don't offer anything better".
With much less Success, not even close. Acura was the first in 1986 but they are currently behind Hyundai in some areas, no 6 speed, no V-8.
