Toyota claims that the new 3rd-generation Avensis is the most "European" car they've ever launched:
Europe influenced Toyota's new Avensis
by Tony Lewin - Automotive News Europe
The new Avensis is the most European car launched by Toyota, Kazuhiko Miyadera, Toyota Europe's senior vice president of r&d, said.
Miyadera said a chief engineer based in Europe helped to develop the upper-medium car, a first for the automaker.
"By having our key project leaders based both in Japan and Europe, we could ensure that local requirements were considered at each stage of design and development," he said.
For the first time, early prototypes of the vehicle were built in Europe, Toyota said.
Toyota's European styling center, ED2, came up with the basic style of the model and designers in Japan refined the design and made it ready for production.
Future Toyota models including the next Yaris will have greater European input, Miyadera said.
The Avensis will go into production in Toyota's factory in Burnaston, England, in November. The car will go on sale across Europe in January.
"We have set ourselves a full-year sales goal of 115,000 cars," said Toyota Motor Europe COO Thierry Dombreval. "We believe this is the most appropriate target for the current market conditions.
Toyota sent 35 European engineers to Japan for 18 months to work on the basic engineering of the new Avensis. They were helped by engineers and specialists from suppliers including Johnson Controls.
"This allowed us to do simultaneous engineering," Miyadera said. "The direct contact helped us avoid the misunderstandings that can happen if you communicate by email.
