There was an article not too long ago in a German car magazine that tested XI and 4Matic against Quattro. The results were pretty interesting. 4Matic is without doubt superior to Quattro.
The overall results were basically like this:
1st Place: Quattro / 4Matic (tie)
2nd Place: XI

The new 2.0L I4 Turbo engine has 258lb-ft of torque, now that is the deal breaker for me. I would choose 2009 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro. In fact, I would rank these entry level luxury sports sedan in the following order:
1. BMW 335i sedan
2. Lexus IS350
3. Infiniti G37 sedan
4. Audi A4 2.0T
5. BMW 328i sedan
7. Lexus IS250
8. Mercedes-Benz C300 Sport
9. Audi A4 3.2
10. Mercedes-Benz C350 Sport
11. Acura TL TYPE S
12. Acura TSX
1. BMW 335i sedan
2. Lexus IS350
3. Infiniti G37 sedan
4. Audi A4 2.0T
5. BMW 328i sedan
7. Lexus IS250
8. Mercedes-Benz C300 Sport
9. Audi A4 3.2
10. Mercedes-Benz C350 Sport
11. Acura TL TYPE S
12. Acura TSX

I read it sometime ago in either an Autobild or AutoMotorundSport magazine at a local cafe (I don't buy them), definitely one of them. I can try looking for it on their websites. When I find it, I will post I will post it here for your benefit. Can you read German?

I speak German by the way (part of my job). The Audi Allroad Quattro tested here had the most torque and the most efficient means of channeling that torque to the wheels without causing uncontrollable wheelspin. Mated to a Quattro AWD system, it is bound to impress.
By the way, the review I read didn't test the cars in the winter but more in everyday driving situations and wet weather.
EDIT: Wow, the RX totally failed this test!

If it's all about looks, no one posting here is going to be able to help. Your friend should get what he/she likes. I haven't been thrilled with the looks of the Audi in recent years (I haven't seen an '09) in person, but as an overall package, it would definitely be higher on my list than the MB.
