Angry How do I say this nicely.......

"KNOCK-OFFS SUCK"

This is bigger than automotive knock-offs. From watches to shirts to blatant copies of home designs to toys to purses.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/knockoff

Main Entry:
knock·off Listen to the pronunciation of knockoff
Pronunciation:
\ˈnäk-ˌȯf\
Function:
noun
Date:
1966

: a copy that sells for less than the original ; broadly : a copy or imitation of someone or something popular

Where are the ethics?????

I am no angel, I confess my knock-off sins. I wanted Racing Hart C-5s but in chrome back in 2001. I was new on CL and didn't know ANY BETTER. I bought some knock-off Diablo C-5s. Well after chrome chipping and fake rivets popping and wheels bending, I did my research (thanks Manaray and bitkahuna) and promised never to get knock-off anything again.

The amount of knock-offs being produced is getting pretty bad, to ENTIRE CARS.

Don't do it, reconsider!!!

I was offered a big brake kit for my AE86 years ago by a company that makes knock offs of Stoptech brakes. I politely declined as I do not feel right about supporting, much less promoting, companies that make knock-offs that other people spent a bunch of time and money engineering and perfecting.

i wouldn't mind a knock off body kit accessory. There's really no substantial R&D in that. just a piece of plastic.

however, critical components must be originals. no cheaping out on that

? something called design? do you know how many hours it takes to design a body kits and the designer trying to make it look right? just a piece of plastic... that's thoughtful

I have a slightly different take on this. Restoring older vehicles is difficult. Finding parts for them is even more difficult; especially when they are not produced anymore. In light of this fact, there are many replica's and reproductions made to satisfy the increasing demand for older parts. There is also a huge market, even for reproduction OEM parts (just look at the muscle car part industry). There are some who are forced to buy these parts for the sake of not having the original in the first place.

I may get flamed for this but w/e my .02

also there have been good quality knock-offs of BBS wheels in the past

not all knock-offs are much worse in terms of quality

You make a pretty good point, I guess there's a couple exceptions

I don't think it's about the quality. I think it's about the principle of copying someone else's idea (pretty much plagiarism). BBS took all the effort of creating a timeless looking wheel and everyone else is just waiting to copy the design and sell it for cheaper

If you want to save money on parts, just buy them used!

as much as I hate knock-offs, some of genuine parts are really hard to come by or are discontinued already...not much choise but to knock it off
