Why? MR-S is as fast, lighter, better handling, more fuel efficient, and cheaper.....(this is coming from a former S2000 owner).
This car epitomizes why Toyco doesn't do sports cars anymore. Besides, storage room, this car was a home run on all quantitative fronts: price, speed, handling, etc., yet it barely sold and thus discontinued after a few years.
I'm really looking at one of these MR's as a cheap weekend getaway car.

Styling was controversial and I mean 138hp for 26k in a 2 seater with no room.
The 350Z is 26k in comparison!

not for a used one now, and only can get used one now. i've look around and find a lot for like 16k-18k. and 350Z is nowhere near MR-S in weight comparsion. for cornering, MR-S is just as good as the S2000 for a fraction of the price. GAS price, people, GAS price. MR-S own any of those two.

There great cars (if your 5,5ft or shorter). I'm 6,1 and when I had to drive one for work, I would drop the top and sit on the head rest and drive looking over the windshield (no lie) (try backing one like that on a showroom floor) aside from that, great cars (stay away from the sequential shift).

There's some comment on here about the MR-S being a better in-town driver than an S2000. Perhaps if you live in an urban area, eg. Toronto/Frisco/NY, but definitely not on the freeway.
Here's a Veilside MR-S, one of the few Veilside kits I can stomach:

I've had the opportunity to drive a 2002 MR2 spyder for 2 weeks. The biggest problem I had with it was the gearing. Bottom line the gearing is to low. Cruising at 65 on the highway puts the car at around 3500k rpm which to me is way to high. This car needs and I stress NEEDS a 6 speed.
Overall the handling is what makes this car stand out. It's loads of fun to drive as a grocery getter or better yet as a time attack car. Comparing it to an S2000 is really no contest... but for the price you could throw a turbo kit in and out perform most S2000s (stock).

I'm a huge fan of getting it with a hardtop, it negates the innate femininity of the vehicle somewhat for me:

Definitely a bit small though, since I am 6'0". Something to consider in the future though with the economic downturn and all. Yay for it finally being available in Canada however, and I've seen them go for as cheap as 8-9K nowadays.
