i dont think hybrid AWDs really make a difference. unless im mistaken, the front wheels are never propelled by the gas engine, but by the battery...i might be wong though
It depends on the vehicle. The AWD RX400h ICE propels the front wheels along with an electric motor. A second electric motor propels the rear wheels, which do not recieve any power from the ICE and eliminates the need for and weight of a drive shaft to the rear.

The 600hL is a convention AWD though. It transfers power from the ICE to all four wheels and only has one electric motor. Thus it is like the AWD version of any conventional vehicle in that it suffers a gas mileage penalty over the 2WD form. Hence, one part of the reason why the 600hL uses more gas on the highway than the 460.

And hybrids do use their electric motors in combination with ICEs when crusing on the highway. Ive found that the RX400h uses about 12 KW of power during highway cruising.

Tornado's, wild panda's, wild red panda's, the tallest building in the world, and Las Vegas.

But let's not make this a California vs. the world thread

A lot of things are inconvenient, especially when it comes to those things that are supposed to be "better" for you. Things like cooking a healthy dinner vs. grabbing some In-N-Out or making it to that bi-annual dentist appointment vs. making an appointment when your tooth hurts.

There are pro's and con's to everything, and sacrifices must be made in effot to ensure certain gains.

And thanks to those of you who learned me some LS600h... I actually wrote this piece back in March, but it never got published until now.

i would absolutely love to have a diesel lexus. great mileage, great torque, and a lot of tunability. diesels respond very well to mods, and usually get even better fuel mileage afterwards.

When converted, the UK IS220d achieves 30 MPG city, 44 Hwy. 177 HP, 400 NM of Trq. yet it takes 9 seconds to hit 60 MPH. For comparison, the IS250 is rated for 18 MPG city, 30 HWY (MT) & 18/34 (AT).
