Care to explain more how these airbags will actually help in rear impacts?

From the drivers perspective, when hit from behind, all that crap in the car behind the driver will fly away from the driver at the moment of impact.
I would guess that when the car is in a rear collision, the airbags would deploy and stay opened longer to help minimize occupant head injuries from the rear of the car, as it is shown on the iQ, it would most likely go on vehicles that are very close to the rear of the car

How do you know exactly how long the airbags will stay deployed? Fact is you don't. The rear airbags could very well stay inflated longer than other airbags. We don't know exactly how it works, nor have we seen any videos.

Just looking at the design of the airbag itself it's only common sense that it's shape is designed to minimize head movement during a rear impact and more importantly to minimize head injury.

Airbags inflate in a fraction of a second but can stay inflated much longer. BMW in 1997 had side airbags that stayed inflated up to 7 seconds in case the car was going to roll.

the front, side, roof, curtain and knee airbags all have one thing in common. They are all placed in between your body parts and the hard object to absorb the impact of a crash.

If you bang your head against the wall, you would want to place a pillow in between, not on the other side of the wall.

Soon we'll just have exterior air bags to absorb hits before they happen.

Well, my guess for this is not everyones head is lined up with the head rest all time time. If this is the case the airbag should be extended to cover the seatbelt guides.

you do realize that in high speed colissions movement of back seat is quite big? And with your head 2-3" away from back window, i would want an airbag there.

This thing will go on all 7 seat vehicles I assume where passanger head is very close to back window.

I think we will see results as soon as some govt entity decides to crash test back crashes which has never happened so far...
