It should be no contest if they are honest.
1) Superiority - GT-R wipes the floor with the other 16 cars and is therefore superior.
2) Significance - GT-R wipes the floor with the other 16 cars and makes them all insignificant.
3) Value - GT-R wipes the floor with the other 16 cars AND with cars costing twice as much and it costs only 75K

I would have guessed it would have been between the GTR and the Genesis like many have predicted and I would have thought it would be close either way. I'm not surprised the GTR is leading, but I'm shocked in a way that the Genesis is near the bottom and with such a small percentage of votes.

It's not about choosing the best car out of this group or even the best new car period. Neither is it about picking the most exciting, best performing, or best looking car.
Again, your argument for the GT-R is flawed. Not to say it doesn't deserve it, but literally half the cars on the list deserve it just as much based on the criteria that MT has laid out. You can't look at it through performance enthusiasts glasses.

May I remind you that in 1978 the COTY award went to the Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon....a VW-engined, Rabbit-like, FWD subcompact with 70 HP.
In 1996, it went to the Toyota RAV4....hardly a drag-racing or track machine.
In 1971, it went to the Chevrolet Vega, one of the worst American subcompact cars of all time.
There are many other examples, but I won't list them all here.

The cars that I think deserve the win and shakes up their respective segments the most are in bold....
Those that I think are deserving runner ups are in italics...
The rest are not deserving of the win and have no chance...
* Acura TL
* Acura TSX
* Audi A4
* BMW 1 Series
* Dodge Challenger
* Honda Fit
* Hyundai Genesis
* Jaguar XF
* Lincoln MKS
* Mazda6
* Nissan GT-R
* Nissan Maxima
* Pontiac G8
* Pontiac Vibe
* Toyota Corolla
* Toyota Matrix
* Volkswagen CC
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Fit. The Fit is very significant in today's market and is at the top of it's class. It improves on everything that was great with the 1st gen which was still at the top of it's class at 6 years old. It's affordable, fuel efficient, roomy, high in quality, very practical, will have superior resale value, and stylish. All the right ingredients for an economy in turmoil and for buyers not looking to sacrifice too much in the meantime.

Not to mention it could soon be available in a 5.0L engine. AMCI already did a couple of drag races between the Genesis and the 750 and Boxster. Took both of them with no problem. The car isn't all about performance, but the biggest bang for the buck is without question the Genesis' award.
