Why not just negotiate $800 more?
MSRP is the starting point when buying a new car. When I got my Lexus I got $5500 off sticker ($1k under invoice) and it was only the 2nd year run for the IS.
With U.S. economy in the hole right now I'm sure you can negotiate $800 more off MSRP.
If not then walk and start again at a different dealership.

This is the primary reason I decided not to custom order when I got my 335i... they said if lease rates or prices changed in the 6-8 weeks before I got my car then that was just tough luck.

If you don't get the Mercedes you can get a great deal on a 2008 Acura TL, my dad just got one for around 30K and it is a fantastic car, nicer in my opinion then the much more expensive C class and it will certainly be much more reliable.

When I last ordered a car -the agreed upon price was $X off MSRP. The dealer could not "lock in" a price because the MFG can change that price at will. Why should the dealer eat the $800? They didn't raise the price, MB did.
Find out what the increase in COST is and pay that - that seems pretty fair.
But in the end, you didn't agree to buy the car and they didn't agree to sell the car to you, so you are free to walk (which I'd encourage you to do if $800 on top of a $40K car is scaring you away).

Try to work a few hundred dollars off the price. Right now less people are buying cars, especially luxury cars, I think you have a great chance to eliminate these price increase or at least a portion of it.
