Of course I have seen the just recently facelifted SL many times in person, yes I think it's a disaster with the new headlights/grille, etc.. The pre-facelifted SL is one of the prettiest car on the road, they just did all the wrong things to it with the facelift.
The lines that still looks good on the car are those that are left basically unchanged to the pre-facelift version. Now I have zero desire for the newest one.
I wasn't comparing to the previous generation(pre-2003) SL btw.

Not even close in my eyes. The current S-class' rear end looks very ugly to me, I have grown used to the wheel arches, as the Maybach with the same general shape looks even worse without them, but I still won't say they make the car looks aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Those design elements do make the car stand out more, but being eye-catching is not equivalent to being good looking to me. The current S-class's line just isn't as aesthetically pleasing as the previous generation.

As for the new CL-class, everytime I see one on the road, the one thing that strikes me is how dorky the front end looks, the car do look better from other angles, but compared to the previous generation CL, I would say it looks better from any angle than the current one.

Dodge Viper - STRONGLY disagree... I think it looks way better
Infiniti FX - Agree... they made it look like a woman's shoe
Lincoln Navigator - Eh... I agree but all it would take is a bit less chrome for me to be OK with it. Interior is a different story... not my style at all
Nissan Murano - Disgaree
Saab 9-5 - Neutral. Went from ugly, overpriced, and unimportant to ugly, overpriced, a nd unimportant but a little different looking.
Scion xB - Neutral. Went from ugly to ugly with a few more curves.
VW Jetta - disagree. Definitely better looking now (not to say it looks great now)

I could only find five cars go from good looking or average looking to plain ugly and goofy looking.
