Keep an old SC3 or upgrade to an AMG or M?
I'll be starting my clinical rotations next yr so I thought it was time to upgrade from my 95 SC3 with 270k miles. I know the AMG has quite a few annoying electrical and mechanical problems. I've been spoiled by my SC needing barely no work done to it despite the 270k on the clock. The AMG would be w/o warranty. Looking at around 04. I've narrowed it down to a few other cars I would like... CL500 ( TOOOOOOO many problems with them), E55 AMG, G35, Supra TT, M3, or keep the SC and go turbo. I only plan on keeping the car till I get into residency around 2011. Still I want a car that wont have to be in the shop all the time. Do you guys think its a good idea giving up an insanely reliable car for an AMG that could or couldnt have problems? I just have a bad feeling that I'll regret giving up the SC and no I cant keep both.

Well most people actually lease AMG models since they once they hit higher mileage because of costly repairs (unless they do not drive much than those folks usually buy). And well seeing that you like reliability, you should opt for something more reliable.

man I would avoid anything german without a warranty. with rotations coming up you know you cant be late or absent. I would stick with the sc if she will last and get yourself something else if she falls apart.

Check out the Infiniti M45 Sport unless the price is too steep. If so, look at a G35.
If you really want a BMW, look at a 335i or 335xi (in Texas, you probably won't need the xi). AMGs and Ms, admittedly, are great sport sedans, but they can be money pits if/when the work is not warranty-covered.

Stay away from AMG models... I'm dreading repair costs for my wife's ride once the warranty runs out. The car has already had a couple of powertrain issues within 24k miles. We're considering selling it or trading it in for something lesser to own/maintain. Besides, we could use another family car...

LOL..."A Supra without a turbo is like a man without *********."
How bout a SC300 without turbo?
Interestingly, I've thought about the same thing, during my day dreams of suddenly striking it rich.
If this was me, I'd just go turbo, since a reputable tuner shop will do a full refresh on the engine during the Turbo install, which can negate the 270k miles you've put on it. A properly tuned 2gzge engine, in my opinion, is more reliable than an AMG engine or M engine.
Additionally, the power generated from the Turbo 2gzge engine is significantly greater than these European machines under question.
Lastly, you save a lot more money in the Turbo refresh. 10-15k for turbo (parts, install, transmission, exhaust) versus $60k.
Based on the these 3 reasons: 1) More reliable 2) Greater power 3) Cost..
why would anyone consider Europeans if they've already own a car with the indestructible 2gzge engine? For the new car smell?
Devil's advocates, please respond!

The amount I'm looking to spend is low 20s. Based on that, a euro sports car would end up being about the same as going turbo. I need to update my sig. Don't have some of the cars anymore. At this point I'm leaning more towards the M3. Always been a fan and they give decent mpg as well.
Its true that missing or being late to rotations could end up being pretty detrimental. At the same time, I think a M3 wouldnt spend so much time in the shop that it would hurt my finances or work. I've had the SC for quite a while and just feel its time for a change even though I still love the car. Then again, maybe going turbo would be enough to hold me off from another car till residency. Actually by then I might even be able to keep the SC as well as buying something a step up from a M3.
