Default OCTOBER 2008 Vehicles Sales

October auto sales may have hit two-decade low

Fri Oct 31, 2008 7:22pm EDT

By Poornima Gupta and David Bailey

DETROIT (Reuters) - U.S. auto sales are expected to plunge to the lowest levels of the year in October and possibly the slowest running rate in two decades, with no certainty of when consumer confidence will return.

The U.S. automakers, struggling to preserve their shrinking pools of cash as they fight for survival, are poised to post sales declines of up to 40 percent, with the overall market sagging potentially to levels not seen since the 1980s, when the United States had 60 million fewer residents.

General Motors Corp, Ford Motor Co and Chrysler LLC are expected to lead the U.S. sales declines, but all six of the top sellers -- including Toyota Motor Corp, Honda Motor Co Ltd and Nissan Motor Co Ltd -- were expected to report lower sales.

High gas prices blunted U.S. auto sales earlier in 2008, but the plunge in consumer confidence -- which hit the lowest level in the four decades as the Conference Board measured it -- has pushed out expectations for a recovery beyond next year.

U.S. October auto sales were "pretty much as advertised," Ford chief sales analyst George Pipas said on Friday, adding that the seasonally adjusted annual rate would likely be around 11 million to 12 million vehicles in October.

But Ford executives hope that government response to the credit crisis would improve the overall retail atmosphere.

"There is a lot of action being taken by the Federal government, by the Federal Reserve, and by the Congress and we are hopeful that will stimulate demand," said Mark Fields, Ford's president of the Americas.

In a bright spot, Ford is confident its retail share of the U.S. auto market in October will rise to the highest in two years.

Barclays Capital analyst Brian Johnson expects a 39 percent drop in sales for the Detroit-based automakers in October, which was marked by low consumer confidence and "particularly poor showroom traffic."

"We believe that the pressure on auto sales from limited credit availability is mounting," Johnson said, adding it appeared dealers were facing a 10 percent to 15 percent headwind from the tighter lending practices.

A BAD MONTH ... NOW A DEAL?

Overall, U.S. light vehicle sales were expected to be in a range of 11 million to 11.3 million vehicles, according to analysts and industry executives -- a sharp decline from 16.04 million last October and 12.5 million last month.

Overshadowing the U.S. sales figures, key early indicators that economists use to gauge consumer spending and the broad health of the U.S. economy, are the merger talks between GM and Chrysler parent Cerberus Capital Management, which could result in the sale of all or part of Chrysler to GM.

Automakers pushed in October to tell customers that financing was still available despite the credit market turmoil and, in some cases, put thousands of dollars on the hood of slower-selling models to try to clinch the sale.

Toyota, which led GM in the third quarter as the world's largest automaker by sales volume, offered zero percent financing across 11 models in an effort to boost demand. Toyota's U.S. sales were down 10 percent through September.

Nissan said on Friday it was offering interest free loans on five popular models, including Altima and Sentra sedans.

Nissan expects a boost in sales in November and December from the loan incentive, which runs through January 5.

Some dealers have said consumers were having a tough time closing new car deals because many lenders tightened their standards or had completely pulled out of the auto loans market.

GMAC, earlier this month, announced it would offer auto loans only to consumers who have high credit scores, a decision that is expected to hurt GM's sales further.

On an unadjusted basis, Edmunds.com expects GM sales to drop 40.7 percent, Chrysler to drop 38.1 percent and Ford to drop 34.7 percent. It expects a 29.2 percent drop at Nissan, a 17.2 percent slide at Honda and a 15.5 percent fall at Toyota.

"Looking ahead, November is traditionally one of the worst sales months of the year and December is usually one of the best," Edmunds.com executive director of industry analysis Jesse Toprak said.

"If the election and other variables don't have a significant impact on auto sales through December, we are looking at an annual total of about 13.6 million units."

I think we've hit bottom, with gas prices having fallen now like a rock, the bailout beginning to help a bit, and the election almost over.

Don't think so yet, I mean with all these financial problems, I don't think auto loans are going to be handed out so easily now

Default Volkswagen reports october 2008 sales

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Monday, November 3, 2008

HERNDON, Va.— Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced October 2008 sales of 15,889 units, a 7.9 percent decrease over the October 2007 sales of 17,260 vehicles. On a year-to-date basis, 2008 Volkswagen sales are 0.6 percent behind 2007 sales through October.

“This is the toughest economy we’ve seen in a long time especially within the automotive industry.” said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “Our Tiguan, Jetta SportWagen, and TDI’s continued to sell well for the month of October, which demonstrates the strength of our new products.”

About Volkswagen of America, Inc.

Volkswagen of America, Inc. recently announced Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) as standard equipment on all its 2009 model year vehicles. As a result, Volkswagen is one of the only original equipment manufacturers to offer an electronic stabilization control system on its entire product line – ahead of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) deadline requiring stabilization systems in the 2012 model year vehicles. Default Audi October Sales A New Record

- Audi new vehicle sales up 0.3% for October
- Launch of all-new Audi 2009 A4 drives sales
- A8 and R8 sales up; A5 posts third consecutive record month
- Audi expects to grow market share again

HERNDON, Va., Nov 3, 2008 - Audi today announced sales for the month of October totaling 7,443, an increase of 0.3 percent. This follows on a robust September when the luxury brand attained an all-time record share of the luxury sector. Strong performances from the A5, A8, R8 and all-new A4 models contributed to the October increase. Audi new vehicle sales are down only 3.5 percent year-to-date as the company contends with a double-digit decline in the luxury market due to the softening economy.

“While others in the industry focus on cutting, we're focused on building," said Johan de Nysschen, executive vice president, Audi of America. "The current market conditions represent an opportunity for consumers and for Audi. Audi's European heritage means that we are well positioned with vehicles featuring powerful, but fuel-efficient, high-performance engines. And our vehicle portfolio is among the youngest and most dynamic in the industry today.”

Though industry-wide sales results won’t be known until later today, de Nysschen expects Audi to capture more market share. Early predictions by industry analysts indicate that Audi may be one of only a few brands to post a positive performance in October.

Following its late-September release, the all-new 2009 Audi A4 confirmed strong consumer interest in its first full month of sales reporting, with 3,784 units sold. Dealers also reported strong demand for the Audi A5 coupe, posting a third consecutive month of record sales with 865 units sold. De Nysschen also noted that dealers have nearly sold out 2008 model year inventory, setting Audi up for growth on the heels of the A4 launch and the forthcoming Audi Q5 in early 2009.

The brand also increased consumer interest in October with the Audi Mileage Marathon, a coast-to-coast efficiency drive from New York to Santa Monica showcasing the Audi TDI clean diesel technology. The Mileage Marathon also marked the U.S. debut of Audi’s Q7 TDI luxury sport utility vehicle, which will be the first Audi clean diesel vehicle available in the United States when it enters dealer showrooms next year. On its cross-country trek, the Q7 TDI averaged 28 m.p.g., without compromising the power and performance drivers have come to expect from Audi.

2008 has also brought Audi a stream of industry accolades. J.D. Power and Associates, the respected industry organization that measures quality within the auto industry, among other metrics, cited Audi in its 2008 J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey for the greatest ranking improvement in initial quality. Additionally, the Audi Q7, A3, A4 and A6 have been recognized by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) as Top Safety Picks in 2008, earning Audi the most Top Safety Pick designations for 2008 models of any luxury automaker this year. Most recently, the Audi A5 received the Active Lifestyle Vehicle of the Year Award (luxury on-road category) from a panel of automotive journalists and athletes assembled by the Active Network.

Audi Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales were down 8.5 percent for October with 2,016 units sold, although sales are up 27.1 percent year-over-year.

NOTES:
- A4 includes Audi A4 sedan, Avant, and RS models.
- A5 includes Audi A5 coupe’ and S5 coupe’ models.
- A6 includes Audi A6 sedan, S6 sedan and A6 Avant models.
- A8 includes Audi A8 sedan, A8L sedan, and S8 sedan models.
- TT includes Audi TT coupe’ and TT roadster models.

F-Series Powers Ford to Highest Retail Share in Two Years; Flex, Lincoln MKS Gain More Retail Share

- Ford's F-Series drove through economic gauntlet to post October sales of
43,324, lifting Ford to highest retail share in two years.

- New F-150 launch begins from position of strength with the one and only
'Truck of Texas' crown in tow.

- Ford Focus, Fusion and Escape also contribute to strong retail
performance.

- New Ford Flex crossover and Lincoln MKS sedan continue to grow retail
share.

- Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 129,121.

DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- An economic gauntlet,
the likes of which haven't been seen in more than two decades, could not
deter Ford's best-selling F-Series truck. Ford dealers celebrated Truck
Month by delivering 43,324 F-Series in October.

October also marked the annual Texas Truck Rodeo competition conducted
by the Texas Auto Writer's Association, punctuated with the new F-150
besting all competitors to take the coveted "Truck of Texas" crown.

"We're launching the new F-150 from a position of strength," said Jim
Farley, Ford group vice president, Marketing and Communications. "The F-150
has raised the bar again with best-in-class capability and unsurpassed fuel
economy."

The 2009 model Ford F-150 has class-leading capability, delivering
11,300 pounds towing and 3,030 pounds payload and unsurpassed fuel economy
of 21/15 highway/city mpg with the SFE package, which is available on
F-150's highest volume XL and XLT series.

The national marketing launch of the F-150 began Sunday, Nov. 2, and
nearly 3,000 new F-150s already were delivered to customers in October.

The company's strong retail sales performance in a challenging
environment enabled Ford to post its highest retail share in more than two
years. In addition to the F-Series, the Ford Focus and Fusion sedans and
Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner small utility vehicles contributed to the
balanced retail performance. In addition, the new Ford Flex crossover and
Lincoln MKS sedan continued to gain retail share in their segments.

"Our dealers delivered solid overall performance in October," said
Farley. "Challenging external conditions present the best opportunity to
challenge the competition. In the next nine months, we will introduce nine
new products plus two new hybrids, which together account for 45 percent of
our volume in 2009. Every new product will offer customers class-leading
fuel economy and product quality that's on par with the best in the
industry."

Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 129,121 in October, down 29
percent compared with a year ago.

Note: The sales data included in this release and the accompanying
tables are based largely on data reported by dealers representing their
sales to retail and fleet customers.

Ford spun those results so hard its not even funny. Everything is down. The Edge is down BIG, nearly 60%. Volvo might not be here much longer, makes no sense, not even 5k units for an entire brand!!!!
Lincoln also has a problem, no more Town Car fleet sales, everything is down but the MKS.

Ford's spin on sales was quite funny. Looks like Toyota's 0% financing helped, Corolla sales were UP. Amazing under the current market conditions. Camry sales remained pretty solid as well.

C-Class sales FINALLY took a huge hit, it was bound to happen sooner or later.

Geeze so many declines!! For most brands, it's not even about selling more than the competitors..it's about survival.

Lexus got hit in the head!!! Down 38% month to month!!! Down 18% for the year, with 220k units sold.

98 SC 430s were sold! Only 819 GSs. Wow.

Porsche Reports October 2008 Sales

ATLANTA, GA. November 3, 2008:

Porsche Cars North America Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne SUVs in the United States, today announced October sales in the United States of 1,427 compared to last year’s record-breaking October total of 2,862, a decrease of 50%.

For the first 10 months of calendar year 2008, Porsche sales are now 22,503 vs. 29,140 over the same period in 2007, off 23%.

The challenging sales environment in the car market, even for luxury brands, continues with Porsche’s October sales virtually on par with the 1,458 total in September of this year. Thanks to the recent introduction of its next-generation 2009 911 Carrera and Carrera 4 models, Porsche sold 12% more 911 sports cars in October than in the month before (September 2008). Another model that didn’t pay tribute to the continuing sales drought, especially in SUVs, was the Cayenne V6, which was 15% ahead of the previous month.

In addition, dealers sold 391 Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned cars in October vs. 553 for the same period last year.
