I think a hybrid is understandable for ease of acceleration of heavy loads. But to haul hitched items may be inefficient, because of the lack of top end power to continue to move the heavy loads.

You'll still need a big engine to efficiently move the load forward. So, a V6+hybrid engine such that of the Highlander is still necessary for a functional pick-up truck.
True but didn't Toyota hold off on a Tundra Hybrid because the elec. motors couldn't take the stress? Instant torque, yes but it's whether the elec. motors can take the abuse of heavy towing.

It is being used on diesel trucks, but not sure how well it would handle with regular gas engines

With the small size of the pickup's bed, and the large size of the Prius battery pack behind the seats, I don't see where there will be much room to haul things.

There are hybrid buses - the Gillig Low Floor Hybrid and New Flyer DE40LF/DE60LF that use Allison's hybrid system - which does resemble HSD in many ways and the Orion VII hybrid that uses a Honda-like drive system.

Tahoe hybrid can tow 7,000 lbs.

Hey all - I copied this article below from a trade publication that I read. Did not want to make a post just for this. I am curious to see if any of this hybrid technology could be used to "Hot-Rod" normal combustion engine vehicles.

NEW LEXUS HYBRID IN THE WORKS?
Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus unit will unveil an all-new hybrid-electric model at the North
American International Auto Show in Detroit, according to Japanese media reports.
Mag-X suggests the new vehicle (codenamed HS250h) will be based on Toyota’s
upcoming “SAI” hybrid platform, which is expected to be positioned between the Prius
and Camry hybrids. The Lexus derivative will include upscale appointments such as LED
lights, a plush interior and a control system akin to BMW’s iDrive unit.

Here is another source.

I'm aware of hybrid busses cause I rode in one powered by GM's Two-Mode system.

Yeah but it uses a regular 4-speed automatic. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the engine can be connected directly to the transmission (4 clutches right?) so the elec. motors won't be under too much stress.

not 50mpg, but with the selectable 4wd option set to 2wd in 4cyl rangers you could easily get 30...

they hardly sell any of them now.

hey what about a turbodeisel hybrid? similar to VW's TDI 4cyl which already can get 50mpg in the right car, attach that to a hybrid and you'd see ridiculous mileage with no lack of torque at all, with the turbo taking care of the upper end.

nevermind running it on biodeisel as well, the environmentalists would be all over that.

And Toyota has a variety of transmissions to choose from.

My biggest turnoff to a hybrid is that I can't get a traditional MT anymore. Honda used to offer their hybrids with MTs, but they jumped on the CVT train, which is great and the best choice, but I wont give up my standard tranny just yet.

Toyotas are all CVTs... two types I believe.. one for the GSh & LSh and one for all the other hybrids although i think the HiHy and RXh also have a reduction gear.
