Optimal Mileage for Lexus to New Lexus Trade?
Our 2006 RX 400h is up to 42,500 miles. When we bought the car new the salesman mentioned the optimum trade point is 59,000 miles because it meets the criteria for Lexus Certified. Get over 59,900 miles and the dealer loses that option.
We have traditionally traded cars at 90,000 to 145,000 miles depending on how well we liked the car and if it was a money pit. This car is a sweetheart, my wife likes it (her car) and probably can go 200,000 miles and 15 years. However, I've looked at our overall financial record with cars and don't see where we have optimized our investment all that much with driving cars past 90,000 miles.
Anybody have experience with determining the optimal mileage/age trade point?
Thanks in advance.

As with all lux cars the depreciation hit is at the beginning. The difference is that, unlike our Bavarian friends across the street (who recently reduced maintenance intervals to a whopping 15k), our Lexus vehicles last as long as we want them to... so my philosophy is just to keep the car. The marginal depreciation decreases substantially per mile, and it's not like you will have trouble getting rid of one that has an odometer into the six figures.

Dave, there are some Toyota hybrids with high miles still going strong. Check out the last post on this link as it references a hybrid with 200,000 miles on the original batteries before getting replaced by Toyota. Another post in the thread quotes a comment about an extremely low percentage of Toyota hybrids needing battery replacement.
