How are you defining "number one automaker"? Worldwide sales volume puts
VW/Audi and it's other divisions at number 3 in the world (they just overtook Ford this year). The nearly bankrupt GM is closer to #1. Toyota is numero uno.

Their quality is worse than the your average GM and Ford product, so that's not it.

So why are they #1?

I agree the XF is REALLY beautiful. My only nit is the top of the headlights.

And here is (perhaps) the ugliest one....the Yaris hatchback:

It actually doesn't look that terrible in that picture, but besides the ugly exterior is one of the ugliest modern interiors EVER.

He may also be referring to the contributions of VW's huge sales in Europe, where the Golf/Rabbit, from the last figures I saw, was the top-selling single vehicle. That alone, of course, would not necessarily make VW #1 worldwide.

Their quality is worse than the your average GM and Ford product, so that's not it.
Only in electronics, wiring, and some cheap plastic interior stalks, where VWs and Audis do in fact have problems. Other than that, I'd take one over the average domestically-designed product (especially Chrysler/Dodge) in a heartbeat.
The superb DSG transmission alone (where it is available) is a big selling point.

i don't know what happened to styling but I do know some companies take it more seriously than others.

Ferrari + Lamborghini + Maserati + Land Rover + Jaguar

vs

Toyota + Nissan + Honda + Fiat + GM + Ford + Chrysler + Hyundai

Oh, I think the latter group takes styling seriously, but they just aren't very good at it.
