This is why the auto industry is going under. How much profit is made when you have to give vehicles away for FREE?

For the last two months, I have also seen most Ford dealers slashing $10,000 off of F-150's and even Nssan dealers have done the same with their Titan.

And yet I had to pay an inflated price for the privilage of buying a Yaris.

Supply and demand fella's, supply and demand...

What would be more attractive is if it was buy a Ram and get any model of equal or lesser value for free. I don't know many people that would want two of the same model. The exeption could be made with a the more in demand models such as the Charger and Caliber.

in this economy, they rather sell them at a loss than not sell them at all

Its not the entire industry. Nissan/Ford and Dodge simply build cars and dealers order without much of a though to sell ratio. Thus dealer lots fill with unwanted vehicles, pissing dealers off. No one wants to sell a vehicle no one wants to buy, it just wastes dealer space and resources.

There must be better inventory control.

this begs the question......

if they're able to sell cars at 60% off now, where did all the money go when they were only 10% off and they made 50% extra profit????

where did all that money go huh???

MSRP is a bunch of bullhsit. they pull the numbers out of their ***.

how much does it cost to build a cheap big truck? $5000?

Profit margins aren't as big as you think. There are good margins on large trucks, SUV's and premium cars but common cars don't produce all that much profit. In fact, automakers do not even like building small economy cars as the margin is too small for any dealing or noticable profits. That's exactly why American automakers don't build a single sub-compact even though they are proven to sell very well (look at Yaris, Fit, Versa, Accent, ect.) They've actually said that they can't figure out how to profit off of a small car so they gave up. Even Toyota and Honda have to depend on large vehicles to make most of their money.

And no, a big truck doesn't cost only $5K to build. I hope you're exaggerating.

A US automaker spends $1,900 for each vehicle they make on pensions and health care ALONE not counting hourly labor costs. Then they have a million other cost breakdowns that have to be sliced from the pie.

Is there any wonder why GM and Chrysler are on the verge of bankruptcy and Ford not too far behind?
