The aging G platform outsold the ugly TL by a pretty good margin (4500 units vs 3200). Guess customer were forced to flee Acura dealerships out of disgust

Unhappy Summary

Chrysler, GM, Toyota, Hyundai report massive sales declines

Every major automaker today reported significant U.S. sales declines for the month of November. Worst hit - so far - was Chrysler, down a whopping 47 percent. But Nissan and General Motors weren’t far behind with massive 42 and 41 percent drops, respectively. You might be surprised to hear Hyundai is next on the list, declining 40 percent, and sister company Kia tumbled 37 percent. And even Toyota’s sales slumped by 34 percent.

Nissan division reported a 44.4 percent drop, while its Infiniti luxury subsidiary saw a 28 percent drop.

Honda reported an overall decline of 32 percent. Mazda sales were down roughly the same amount — 31.3 for the month of November. Ford fared slightly better than much of the competition, reporting a 31 percent decline in sales. Following closely was Daimler, reporting a 30 percent drop in Mercedes-Benz and Smart sales. BMW sales were down 27 percent.

Subaru seems to be fairing the best so far - the Japanese automaker’s sales were down just 8 percent and its Forester compact SUV had its best November ever.

Mitsubishi sales were down 36 percent to 5,096 units, though the Outlander had its best month in six months.

But sometimes it’s important to dig a little deeper into these numbers. For example, BMW brand sales were off a whopping 36.1 percent. Sales of Mini models shot up an amazing 43.1 percent, which helped to improve BMW’s overall figures. Similarly, Mercedes brand sales were actually down 38 percent, offset somewhat by sales of Smart models, which began in the United States in January 2008.

Over at the Chrysler camp, sales figures are a mixed bag of bad and worse. Chrysler brand sales collapsed 57 percent, while Dodge was down 44 percent and Jeep 42 percent. Chrysler 300 and Sebring sales fell by 70 percent and 67 percent, respectively. Aspen and Challenger sales were the only good news.

Ford was a little more balanced, with the namesake brand declining 30 percent, and Mercury falling a predictable 41.4 percent. Surprisingly, Lincoln sales were down just 8.3 percent, which is definitely a good sign for the luxury brand, which introduced the new MKS sedan this year. Ford’s Volvo subsidiary was the firm’s biggest loser, reporting a 46.5 percent decline.

The Toyota and Lexus divisions had comparable declines of 33.8 and 34.7 percent, respectively. Scion sales slumped the most — down 45 percent. Rival Honda was slightly more polarized, with the luxury Acura division posting a 39 percent decline, compared with a 30.6 percent drop for the Honda brand.
Data sheets
# Chrysler - 85,260 units - down 47 percent
# Toyota - 130,307 units - down 34 percent
# Honda - 76,233 units - down 31.6 percent
# Hyundai - 19,221 units — down 40 percent
# Kia - 15,182 units — down 40 percent
# Mercedes/Smart - 15,991 units - down 30 percent
# Mazda - 14,134 units - down 31.3 percent
# Subaru - 13,706 units - down 8 percent
# Nissan/Infiniti - 46,605 units - down 42.2 percent

The Smart figures may be questionable. It depends on how some of those figures for the Smart cars were tallied.

For example, with the typical 12-14 month wait for new Smarts, a lot of customers who ordered cars last spring, or even in January-February 2008, when Smart first opened up shop here, may STILL have not received them. So it begs the question (which the article may not fully address) whether a "sale" includes deposits, pending vehicle orders, a signed Bill of Sale, or actual cars delivered.

For example, when I reviewed the Smart-for-Two last February, I was told that if I ordered one that day, it would be 12-14 months for delivery (though two or three of them on the lot were available, right then, for sale).......last I heard, that year-long wait had not significantly changed.

GM Reports 154,877 Deliveries in November

U.S. auto industry remains at historically low levels, down 400,000 vehicles, or 34 percent, from last year

DETROIT - General Motors dealers in the United States delivered 154,877 vehicles in November, down 41 percent compared with a year ago. GM car sales of 58,786 were off 44 percent and truck sales of 96,091 were down 39 percent. The steep decline in vehicle sales was largely due to a significant drop in the market's retail demand compared with last year, and continuing economic uncertainty that has negatively impacted consumer confidence.

"In November we saw the continuation of the dramatic decline in volume for the industry. Every manufacturer is posting awful numbers and we are no exception," said Mark LaNeve, vice president, GM North America Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. "We have outstanding products in the market, so it is particularly frustrating when economic uncertainty takes our customers out of the market. There were about 34 percent, or 400,000, fewer vehicles sold this November in the industry than a year ago - this is the annual volume of two full production plants that have simply evaporated in a single month. The global economic crisis and credit freeze have had a very negative impact on the vehicle market which runs on consumer confidence and available financing.

"The fact that we have outstanding, high quality, fuel efficient products and great deals in almost every market segment is not driving demand right now," LaNeve added. "The consumer is scared and sitting on the sideline. We need appropriate economic stimulus to get the consumer back in the game."

To offer customers an outstanding value at year-end, GM's Red Tag Event continues through January 5, 2009. The Red Tag Event provides great deals on most new vehicles in GM's portfolio by offering a special Red Tag vehicle price and customer cash back. GM's "Financing That Fits" program enables consumers to find financing at affordable rates from GMAC and thousands of other banks, credit unions and financing institutions.

Despite the weak market in November, Chevrolet Malibu continued its solid performance with total sales up 31 percent compared with last November. Year to date, Malibu total sales have now exceeded 160,000 cars, up 39 percent from the same period last year. With its six-speed transmission and four-cylinder engine combination, the Malibu delivers an EPA-estimated 33 mpg highway - tops in the industry's mid-car segment. The Malibu Hybrid also offers the lowest-priced hybrid in the segment.

GM hybrids continue to build sales momentum. A total of 1,335 hybrid vehicles were delivered in the month. Hybrid sales included: 404 hybrid Chevrolet Tahoe, 190 GMC Yukon and 173 Cadillac Escalade 2-mode SUVs delivered. There were 195 Chevrolet Malibu, 45 Saturn Aura and 328 Vue hybrids sold in November. Hybrids comprised 10 percent of combined Yukon/Tahoe retail sales and 12 percent of Escalade retail sales in the month. So far in 2008, GM has sold a total of 11,884 hybrids.

GM inventories dropped compared with a year ago. In November, only about 862,000 vehicles were in stock, down about 130,000 vehicles (or about 13 percent) compared with last year. There were about 379,000 cars and 483,000 trucks (including crossovers) in inventory at the end of November.

Looks like the full-size truck market, at least for Detroit is outperforming the industry. The full-size trucks look to be a good boost for Ford and GM in particuliar. I'm curious to see how F-series sales will perform with the newly redesigned F-series out. Dodge just redesigned the Ram pickup as well.

Ford F-series 37,911 -18.6%
Chevy Silverado 29,534 -22.5%
GMC Sierra 10,497 -24.2%
Dodge Ram 15,538 -36.5%
Toyota Tundra 6,607 -55.9%
Nissan Titan 1,022 -79.6%

Falling gas prices might help the truck mix, but credit and unemployment problems lower overall sales of everything.

Very tough.

Oh and I think the Genesis is THE reason why GS sales have cratered.

I wonder if the Lincoln MKS is taking some sales from the GS as well. Lincoln has been posting very good (relative term) numbers for the MKS.

Horrible month for everyone. Camry sales FINALLY take a hit, it's incredible how well Camry sales have held up. Despite the sales hit, Camry almost outsold the Accord and Altima *combined*. Corolla sales continue to hold quite well. Accord sales were hit hard once again. Prius sales are still supply limited, nobody should be surprised there.

Also, Lexus beat Benz and BMW for the month. Looks like Lexus will remain sales leader in 2008 even though it will be close with BMW. ES almost outsold the C-Class, amazing. Just like predicted, the new TL in only it's second month of sales, and it's already down big. MDX sales down HUGE. RX sales were almost TRIPLE that of the MDX. For all of those that say they would rather buy the MDX over the RX, the market certainly disagrees with you. RX sales continue to be quite strong given the marketplace. Benz M-Class and Buick Enclave outsold the MDX for the month.

Sequoia sales are an anamoly and it looks like the competition is directly losing sales because of the Sequoia.

Chrysler and GM were the worst-hit, no surprise there. Interesting that Ford sales did not drop as much.

Hardly. GS sales have been down big WELL before the Genesis came out.

It's interesting to note that MKS sales for the month, 1,958 are about 70% better than Genesis @ 1,151. I'm sure these two are cross shopped.

YTD it's 10,862 for MKS and 5,127 for Genesis - But I think the MKS has been out for a longer period.

Both are relatively small numbers in the big picture.
