YTD it's 10,862 for MKS and 5,127 for Genesis - But I think the MKS has been out for a longer period.

Both are relatively small numbers in the big picture.
The Genesis and MKS both went on sale in June of this year. July was their first full selling month. With both of these drawing approximately 3k sales a month combined, who are they pulling sales from, if they are pulling sales from others. I thought I'd post up the main mid-size luxury numbers since July, when both MKS and Genesis had their first full month of sales data and see what, if any, conclusions can be drawn.

Interesting info. I would think the ES350 would be cross-shopped with the MKS and maybe to a lesser extent, the Genesis. In Oct 4,116 were sold and 58,899 year-to-date. I don't have the monthly info for it though.

I wouldn't doubt that the ES350 gets cross-shopped because of price point, but the Genesis and MKS are RWD or AWD and our more of direct competitors to say the GS than the FWD ES.

Looking at those numbers, the Infiniti M is still pulling consistent sales numbers. The E-class numbers are consistent if averaged over the past few months. The GS, A6, and 5-series have rather steep declines. S-80 had an interesting spike while RL and STS are slowly fading.

It's not too far of a stretch to say that GS sales have suffered more than the competition in light of the current market place and the current crop of competitors.

It is very difficult to proclaim any model to be a failure but I sure won't miss this gen GS. I am not sure any specific model, like the Genesis or MKS, can be pointed to as being the critical issue. I think there is a lot of competition that does everything better. The biggest thing, maybe by a lot, that the GS has going for it is Lexus.

I know we have other threads on the various auto bailouts but looking at these numbers are interesting. GM/F/C have been all over the tube, along with the UAW, saying that their sales are already being depressed by the talk of bankruptcy from two weeks ago. Personally, I don't buy it. When I look at these sales numbers, it was pretty much an awful month. Even for people who do things right. And GFC don't do things right. I think blaming their sales drops on the inept and arrogant performance of their CEOs two weeks ago and the talk of possible bankruptcy is just more nonsense.

Great info and analysis. Every model has been pretty steady except the GS and RL. The GS had some momentum at the start, but I think it and the RL are failures. I'll say it again... for Lexus to still have a cassette player in its 'stylish sporty large sedan' is a JOKE and shows they really don't care. The RL is dead due to bland styling, it's too small, and no V8. Great car at an Infiniti G price though. They shouldn't have bothered with the new TL - just renamed the RL as TL.

I beg to differ, the A6 has a very similar sales trend as the GS.

Automotive News Europe
December 4, 2008 14:54 CET

Western European new-car sales slumped by a quarter during November, according to figures released Thursday.

Sales fell by 25 percent to 866,995 units, down from 1,156,428 in November 2007, J.D. Power Automotive Forecasting said.

The drop was below already low expectations with concerns that the sales decline in Germany might be getting worse.

Germany, Europe's biggest market, saw sales fall 17.7 percent to 233,772 in November despite government efforts to stimulate demand by lowering vehicle taxation.

J.D. Power said: "This raises the real possibility that the market may plunge to modern era lows in 2009."

Spain was the worst affected big market with sales down 50 percent in November to 63,068 units.

It was followed by the UK (down 36.8 percent) and Sweden (down 36.4 percent).

Of the other five biggest markets, sales in France were also down 14 percent in November to 145,918, and Italy down 30.3 percent to 138,352.

Ireland sales were down 54.6 percent.

J.D Power said it expected a tough 2009, with further reductions as full economic recession affects western Europe.

It said: "We remain concerned about the possibility that French and particularly the German markets may be hit harder next year than is already assumed."

Didn't work out so well. Awesome car, though. Really awesome.

They should be working on one but make sure it's something that has all the best qualities of the brand. But I don't think they need it immediately, not in this economic climate.
