Fuel economy demands. Idiotic European bumper height requirements. Cost constraints. Space and safety expectations.
These aspects force more and more car makers essentially down the same avenue of bland wedge designs.
Looks from that pic like that might be a very basic E class like they use in Europe for taxis. As we know, better wheels can have a pretty positive effect, but still, this looks very disappointing.

I just can't quite figure out why, if you start with a clean sheet of paper and are going to buy all new tooling anyway, why you end up with a design like that? I just write it off to my being out of touch. I am still not sure exactly which car would look good in that brown. It doesn't look rich or enhance the lines or anything. Just metallic brown. Goodness knows it is probably a $10K optional paint.

I cant believe how bad they screwed the new E class up. The current looks beautiful. great conservative lines. Its a great looking car. I just get over the fact that they are replacing it with this hideous thing

Oh man, I just looked at the pricing for the E class. Its ridiculous. It starts at $54k! No wonder they don't sell that great. All of the other midsize luxury vehicles start in the mid $40s.

The E and the 5 are simply the standards for this class still.

I personally have a hard time figuring our which car I would consider the benchmark in this class...there are so many good options.
For 6cyls I would lean towards GS 350 or 535i.
For V8s, I think 550i is really the only way to go.
E Class doesn't really do much for me at all, especially when I could have a GS for a lot less, or an LS for the same amount of money. It's a beautiful car, but it's looks are about the best thing it has going. When I saw the interior shots of the new E, I was certainly not impressed. Like the C, but with wood on the center stack instead of black plastic. Cheap, cheap.
