I really could not care less if the hood has gas struts or not as I can't remember the last time I opened the hood.

vanishing dipsticks is what pisses me off but the hood prop whatever, I'd be more concerned with all the electronics after 60k-100k

Yes it's cheap, but you have to consider that most other Asian competition is the same way, from Honda to Nissan. The only real people who will throw a hydraulic hood assist on a car under $20K is Volkswagen, but you pay more for things like that. I agree it should have it, as it's a ridiculous ommision on a car costing this much. I too notice these details of cost cutting, and it isn't the least bit glamorous.

the ZR1 Corvette (yes the $100k+ one) uses the same steering wheel as the Cobalt (yes the $19k one). I think people should be glad that cost cutting for Toyota is on the hood props.

Or how about gas lids that don't lock?

When gas was $5 a gallon, people were stealing fuel from American cars with twist-off gas caps.

I mean, a Yaris has a locking gas door...

I cannot believe this.
I would guess 90+% of owners never EVER look under the hood so hood struts are irrelevant.

You can say that about almost every part... but each part cost matters multiplied by tens or hundreds of thousands.

As I said, I bet most owners NEVER EVER look under the hood.

I'd gladly give up my hood struts on my '99 LS400 for a friggin underhood LIGHT!!!!

The struts are an added bonus, but I don't think they'd make or break me from buyng a vehicle.

Although I have to say, even my '89 T-bird had struts AND a light.

Our 4runner has two hood struts, so does my 335i. I agree that a prop on either vehicle would make them seem cheapened.

They're really not difficult or expensive to replace so no big deal if they do give out on me.

What does bother me though is realizing that if Toyota is bold enough to visibly cut costs on a 30-40k dollar vehicle like that... what else have they cut costs on that we can't even see?

Like what most said, how often does an owner open up their hood on a frequent (keyword is frequent) basis or to even work on it at night or in the dark unless it's broken down on the side of the road/freeway???

If so, WTH will I be looking for anyways?

Might be an isolated case where a battery cable/connection/air filter piping is loose to cause a stall.
But for the vehicle to break down beyond instant repair will require a tow truck.

I do agree it is a cheap move. You would think at least LIMITED is a step up from the cheap models.

gas struts have their drawbacks as well, not too great in the cold winter months.
I dunno....-40 Celsius up here this past weekend, and the hood on our RX330 opened and closed several times this past weekend with no problems whatsoever.

(As a side note, the reason the hood kept getting opened was to try to boost my father's trouble prone BMW X5...lol).
