WEST RICHLAND, Washington — Limited-production automaker Shelby SuperCars may be looking to break its own record for the "world's fastest production car" with the updated 2009 Ultimate Aero.
The 2009 Ultimate Aero boasts 1,287 horsepower and a top speed of 270 mph. Last year's supercar set the Guinness world record for fastest production car by reaching a top speed of 256.19 mph when the car made 1,183 horsepower. The power increase is largely made possible by a one-piece billet aluminum engine block that is stronger and allows for better lubrication. The midengine twin-turbo V8 is good for 1,112 pound-feet of torque. Outside, there's a new front fascia to enhance aerodynamics and carbon-fiber louvers on the side to increase the amount of air directed over the radiators. The company has also added an AeroBrake, a spoiler that raises by 8 inches during braking to assist in slowing the vehicle. The interior has been thoroughly revamped with carbon fiber on the dash, doorsills and steering column and a PC-based infotainment unit.
Shelby SuperCars set the speed record for a production car on September 13, 2007, with 71-year-old Chuck Bigelow piloting the Ultimate Aero. That run broke the record previously held by the Koenigsegg CCR by 15.09 mph. It was also the first time an American automaker had claimed the title since Ford held it with the GT40 in 1967. SSC hasn't yet said if the company will make another attempt to break its own record with the 2009 Ultimate Aero.
Inside Line says: Shelby SuperCars proves it's serious about keeping that title in American hands. — Eric Tingwall, Correspondent

The bugatti is a real supercar in my eyes. This shelby supercar seems more like a generic discount super car with no reputation or lineage. Bugatti make ferrai look like a young company. SSC???? who the hell are these guys. I dont care what the history of the owner is. Is no Bugatti imo
