Default Honda reportedly kills S2000 replacement, V8 program, RWD Acuras

Honda's attempt to right-size its development schedule and cope with the economic downturn apparently extends beyond the cancellation of the next NSX. According to Autocar, HoMoCo is right-sizing its plans for the next two years, and that includes rethinking the development of a range of rear-wheel-drive Acuras, a new V8, a convertible based on the CR-Z and the S2000's successor.

Acura seems to be carrying the weight of the bad news, with its RWD 7-series rival, originally due out in 2015, cancelled indefinitely, along with development of a V8 engine that would allow the brand to compete with the best and brightest from Germany. The Euro-market Legend could also be on the block and there's a chance that Honda will stop developing two separate Accord models for sale in the U.S. and abroad, instead opting for one mid-size sedan to be sold worldwide.

Unfortunately, the development cease-fire also extends to Honda's smaller offerings. Honda planned to release a drop-top version of its CR-Z after the hybrid goes on sale next year, but that model has been nixed. Even more disturbingly, 2009 will be the last year of production for the S2000, with no heir apparent waiting in the wings.

We're hoping to get more details on the cut-backs as the week progresses, but needless to say, there's more than enough disappointment to go around.

It may be a good move financially, but it's horrible for street credentials.

Acura: You are now just Honda#2.

A twin in a Men's Warehouse suit instead of a blue-collar uniform...

I got an idea. How about they just kill Acura?

Currently, the brand seems to pointless.

The only one that upset me a little is the cancellation of a new S2000, don't really care much for the rest ...

So, they're bringing out a mid size accord to replace the current larger accord? dude, that's called the Acura TSX..... wtf are they thinking? why can't they kill off the pointless cars first? ie Ridgeline, Element, Pilot, RL, MDX, etc...

EPIC!!

Well no one can argue or dispute with me with what I've said for years about Acura. Its just ghey. Period. I am with Gferg, just get rid of it so we can remember the brand in the early 1990s.

There is no excuse for this, they are FOS and NEVER wanted to make Acura a truly credible luxury brand. We have seen Hyundai of all brands offer not just RWD and a V-8 and 6 speed but in a VERY good product. They will not offer the Equos with a BIGGER V-8, 8 speed and RWD. They are investing in it as we speak, even in the downmarket.

So when the economy is GOOD they axe one by one the sports cars and continue to drag their feet with RWD and V-8s.
When the economy is bad, they axe future sports cars, RWD and V-8s.

The conclusion is simple. It didn't matter what the hell was good or bad with the economy, it was a willingess decision and they were/are NOT willing to invest in Acura as they should. Instead we got a bunch of poppycock every month for years about "we want Tier 1", V-8 coming, RWD this, V-10 that. BLAH BLAH BLAH.

Dealers will be PISSED as Acura begged them to invest heavily and revise their dealerships, investing hundreds of millions of their own money as they were PROMISED higher end vehicles that would elevate the brand and bring dealers more profit. Now they will have nicer showrooms with ugly cars, old vehicles and vehicles barely above a comparable Honda.

I'd rather see the NSX and S2000 killed than castrated.

Oh well. Hope that electric scooter is nice.

I won't miss it, the cars just keep getting uglier with the shield thing on the grill.
