Default Top 10 sellers of 2008

Automakers have reported their final sales figures bringing a close to 2008 vehicle sales. While it was a rough very year for American automakers, the Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado held the no. 1 and no. 2 spots on the Top 10 Best-Selling Cars of 2008.

The Toyota Corolla came in at no. 5 with a total of 351,007 while Honda’s Civic followed in at no. 6 with 339,289.

Thanks for posting, the familiar names. Amazing the CR-V has replaced the Explorer! Also amazing that the Camry just outsells the Accord, it used ot be a closer race.

Outside the CR-V, most outsell ENTIRE brands!!!

There's no question, though, that the economy and gas prices affected the numbers.

Look at the F-150 and Silverado, for instance. In a normal year, the F-150 sells 700,000- 800,000, with the Silverado between 500,000 and 600,000. The 515,000 figure for the F-150 this year is a REAL drop......a little less so for the Silverado.

Can't let that happen, now, can we?
Paul.........better trade that Explorer in on a new one.

(Just kidding.....I know you've enjoyed it)

Also amazing that the Camry just outsells the Accord, it used to be a closer race.
For years, the Camry, Accord, and the old-generation Ford Taurus battled in a three-way tie for first place in regular auto sales. For several years in a row, the Camry won, but the difference was not that much.

Outside the CR-V, most outsell ENTIRE brands!!!
I can understand the CR-V's popularity. Though I don't like it quite as much, overall, as the lower-stance/more car-like Outback, there is no denying the CR-V's excellent combination of build quality, all-weather traction, space efficiency, and user-friendliness. I did a shortened/condensed-review on one a while ago, and I thought the hardware/materials on it were better than either its Toyota or Subaru competition, though Subaru, in general, makes the best inexpensive AWD systems.

I'm surprised that the Accord is still selling at such high numbers. The current generation is absolutely horrendous to look at, and I would expect conservative buyers at this segment to jump to Altimas or Camrys.

December % Year-To-Date %
-------- ------------
2008 2007 Change 2008 2007 Change

1. F-Series 41,580 55,069 -24.5 515,513 690,589 -25.4

2. Silverado-C/K Pickup 33,340 53,560 -37.8 465,065 618,257-24.8

These trucks may still lead in overall volume of sales, but they lost a far greater percentage of their sales than the next four cars on the list.

For all of 2008 the percentage of change in sales looked like this:
3. Camry -8.0%
4. Accord -5.3%
5. Corolla -5.8%
6. Civic +2.1%

It would appear that the years of trucks leading sales will be behind us in the very near future.

I deny the CR-V's build quality and long have. As an owner of two Honda Accords, the CR-V's overal construction is no better than any other Honda, which means as of late, cheap bits everywhere. The CRV has the same hard plastic panels on the inside, the same screwheads, the same chintzy feeling weather striping, and the same unrefined underhood space. For comparisons sake, the new Tiguan makes the CR-V looks utilitarian, from styling to actual substance (powertrain, build quality, steering). I have never been impressed by the ugly CR-V. It;s always been an expensive and underpowered cute ute. Nothing questionable with it's popularity, it's a Honda.

Damn Americans love their F150's. I guess its really the only way to buy an american car thats not so problematic. Its one of the few american cars that they have actually allowed to evolve and be refined over long periods of time.

VW makes beautiful cars, but in the end it's a VW and that means ridiculous time spent at the shop, and horrible dealers.

I agree, VW makes some nice cars but U.S. buyers just don't buy them like they do other imports.

December sales in this diffficult time for all car manufacturers:

13,933 CRV
8,795 RAV4
6,916 Rogue
1,029 Tiguan

According to consumer reports Ford places well quality wise like the Fusion and stuff. I don't know how the cars actually drive and material.
