2012 Audi A7 First Drive

Audi is trying to carve out yet another niche in the luxury car segment — the luxury five-door hatchback. It doesn't need to be a big niche, as the automaker only plans to sell us 7,000 A7s in a full year.

If the 2012 Audi A7 was just a utility play, though, we'd be highly doubtful about its prospects in the United States. We Americans do not like hatchbacks unless they're pretending to be something else.

The A7 is pretending to be a coupe, and a particularly graceful one at that. It looks better than most luxury sedans, and it drives like a big A5. It may not be elite enough for the millionaires sunning themselves on Costa Smeralda, but it's the classiest car in the Audi lineup.

Thanks for the update, Mike.

Really not digging the design of this car. Overall, it look's like Audi's take on the Infiniti J30.

BMW 5-series GT competitor?

The interior is nice but the pop-up navigation looks like an after thought. The rear profile reminds me of those old Jensen Interceptors.

Mike I am very disappointed, exterior does NOTHING for me. They had a chance to really do something different and instead it looks like any other Audi sedan. Interior is different, busy and BMWish but its nice, lots of wood.

I just can't believe they basically made a stretched A5 sportback.

First angle pics alright. Second looks like a CLS and GranTurismo GT BMW thingy had a child. Look at that high definition nav!!! Seems most other makes have better nav systems than Lexus

It is just plain ugly and odd looking especially that horrible rear end. How hard is it to design a sleek low slung sexy sedan. Why do they have to ruin designs with those dumb styling cues or trying to throw in some CUV/hatchback bits in there. Mercedes CLS was very nice, I figure Audi could come up with something even nicer looking then this disaster. Very disappointed. The new CLS is not very good looking either but much better then this.

Huge Audi fan, but damn...that rear is ugly! Badly proportioned, even the S-line is ugly, usually S-line trims Audis are stunning. Interior though, in typical Audi fashion is well put together.

Looks decent. Droopy rear ends are hard to pull off. I rather see a traditional boot that kicks up a bit. This brown car needs to be lowered. Everyone likes a car that is lower. But absolutely love the dash. Very modern and stylish.
