+1^ ... Some of these cars are very cool but I don't know that they qualify as timeless, or even as 'contemporarilly' styled.

Gotta agree w. the 1SC though for sure.

Anyone notice that coupe styling seems to last longer than sedan styling? Further to that, does anyone think that coupe-styled-sedans will be slightly more timeless than the traditionally-styled sedan?

The Alfa-Romeo Montreal. First produced in 1970. Truly a classic, but with just a tire and wheel update, would look like fresh off the production line. 3925 units produced between 1970 and 1977. DOHC 2.6 liter V-8. I've driven one at speed. Great fun!

It really is a wide car too!

^^ I think that no Alfa ages, because they are all so good looking, just change the tires, and most Alfa's will look brand new

It probably has to do with the average American's size increase as well as a change in average family size. When I try to street-park in NY, I can't help but think to myself, "If we Americans weren't so big, I could find a spot." Additionally, as conspicuous consumption increased, manufacturers wanted to jet as far from generic as possible. It's the people with families that are going to try to get the fancy-looking cars on which lines and sculpting keeps evolving. People who are getting coupes probably don't have a family, so their lifestyles lean more to sport, where function > form, so styling becomes more versatile.

It's amazing how many sports cars/coupes from the '90's that were so timeless and ahead of their time. Seems like that trend is gone (of course it doesn't help that many companies aren't building sports cars like they did back then).

Why were '90's sports cars so beyond other cars at the time but today sedans are just as stylish and modern as many of today's sports cars?

Here's an example of a 1992 sedan (Cadillac no less) shown below and it doesn't look much newer than a car from the '70's. But in '92, we had cars like:

SC3/400
Viper
NSX
300ZX
3000GT
911
Testarrosa
F40
Diablo
Supra (in '93)

That's my list btw, And all at least 16 years old!!

A 1992 Caddy!.....

i think almost all car designs don't age well. part of it is to do with manufacturing advances that mean older car designs have limitations they couldn't work around at the time.

having said that i agree with those who say the 300ZX stands the test of time. i just love it.
