This is ironic, I was just talking about this car with my buddy the other day. In later years (when the 840 was introduced) there was a CSI version with a cool OEM kit and wheels, I loved that one. It was sort of a mock "M" from the manufacturer.
These cars get about a 4 or 5" rear lip too, sick!
The 840i's had a 8cylinder, not the issue prone 12, so they were alot better reliability wise.

My neighbor in Fort Worth had one that was modded by Dinan (i think). I think someone else said their neighbor had one modded by Dinan as well...possible we know the same guy?
This one was painted white pearl (similar to the white on the LX/RX/LS), and man was it CLEAN! sat on 20's, had 2 turboes and was (performance wise) modded to the hilt. I think he said one time that it had close to 900 RWHP. a straight beast. It was an 850Ci. Im not sure but i think he still has it, i havent seen him in a couple of years. but i cant imagine someone dropping the kind of money he did on the car, then more on mods, just to get rid of it. This guy had prolly 20,000 in tuning dollars alone. there had to be 100g's under his hood.

Great memory lane car.
One of the VPs at a previous company had one.
His was the V12, Automatic, Garnet metallic on tan. Phenominal car.
He bought it used from a guy with a very full, very large garage. They were so rare that coming up with a price was a challenge.
The bug problem is true. The door handles were multiplexed to a bunch of other things. I think the problem he disliked the most was when the whole dashboard quit.
He said once the 7 yr extended warranty ran out he did not want to take his chances anymore and got a blah 540i sedan

This car is a classic and as far as I know the weak point of the car was with electronics and not the engine. For anyone interested in buying one, skip the 840i. That motor is gutless, a SC400 is faster you will have far fewer problems. But, if you got a spare 20-24k I imagine a 850i would be a worthy investment. Just be sure to leave me a 850CSi

A beautiful car, no question about that...........IMO, perhaps the best-looking BMW ever built. But I'm not a fan of pop-up headlights (they can be unreliable), and it is debatable or not whether it was overpriced.....certainly it was out the price range of the average car shopper.

Always loved the 8. Once in a while Bimmer magazine features well tuned 8 series cars, and have up to date info buying guides on them, a very complex car with electronics, but if I couldn't get a E46 M3, a 850i is the BMW I want to have the most.

To me just getting into Bimmers this seems a bit high priced new but it would be a cool ride to have used. I do like the style more than 6 series cars of today. I love my 335i coupe. It is nice to have a 2 door for once in my....well twice. I forgot about my mustang. BMW makes some good cars and they have a soul or style to them that American cars struggle to attain.
Still, the problems that I hear about scare me down the road. I have mine tuned up and it still runs pretty well.
