WOW!!! What a great car this was. This car was around when I was in high school and I thought it was the most amazing BMW I had ever seen. It was beautiful, German, and had a motor that was 3 times larger than the little hondas my parents used to drive. I am so amazed at how well the design has held up to time. the car imo still looks fresh and sporty with a nice twist of class as well
They initally release the 850 in 1991 with a 5.0 liter V12 with 300 hp. The car was available in a 4 speed AT or a 6 speed manual. After the first year the car started to drop in sales so BMW offered the car as an 830 and 840 trim to reduce the price and increase sales. I still dont think it worked. The car in top trim from BMW was running in the 120K range. I think at the time the buyers could have got a lot more power from the Italian marks for the same cash. Still the 850 was powerful enough, distinctive, and classy imo.
what are your thoughts , memories, etc regarding the BMW 850

I am not saying that I am going to buy one, but the car still had an affect on me when I was a kid. It seemed so classy and powerful. especially for a kid who was only familiar with 75 hp 4 clyinder motors. %.0 liter V12 was bigger than anything I had heard of at the time. Its still holds up in relative size to many of the bigger motors on the market today.

Hehe. So i8 you do like a bimmer! I have to agree with you with this car. There was only one on Guam where I grew up. Always loved that car. And yes it is two nightmares and a half to take care of. Some of the techs would rather have their teeth pulled out than deal with this car. It's that bad!
We had one stuck at the shop for about eh. A month? It looked good . But it was stuck there

I do have respect for Bimmers. I just think the japanese produce equally nice cars( today) for less money, and fewer visits to the dealership. I was a G35 owner so got the name from my last lic plate. I have a new plate now that sits my GS

This car is absolutely amazing-- I have loved this car since I was a little kid (and I have about 4 or 5 die cast models of it in my room, along with a poster of one on my wall haha)
Despite it's problems, I think I'd still buy one if I could and just use it as a weekend car (def. not a daily driver)-- Mmmm Mmmmm 850![Big Grin](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

It was one of the very first cars that made me swoon. I would stop and stare breathlessly everytime I saw one. I thought they were introduced in the 1980's but IDK. I really wanted to buy a used one about 10 years ago but after research proved that would not have been a wise move. I let it go. One of these days, I may get one and swap out the engine with a 2JZ.

I always loved the look of this cars (and I'm NOT a BMW fan). I've always felt that the 3-series, 5-series, and 7-series all look too much like each other. Way too much family resemblance considering the price differences. This car always stood out from the pack. It LOOKED like a rare, expensive BMW.
And, I know I'm in the minority here but, I've always loved the look of the pop-up headlights (first-gen NSX and the like).
Rumor has it that the 8-series was unreliable, even by BMW standards so, I'd never own one but, I still love to look at them when I see them on the road!
