To some people, and probably more than you think, Reliability is the most critical aspect when deciding on a new car purchase.

How does THIS...

Look like either of THESE? (1989 BMW 5 Series)
I just don't see how they copied someone as much as everyone said they have.
The LS, particularly the 3rd gen LS430, totally cribbed the S-Class (esp. the greenhouse and c-pillar).

W/ the current LS430, one can see some styling cues from the 7 Series.

True, but they tend to be people who buy "appliances" and aren't enthusiasts (as presumably most or all who post here are) who care about handling, driver feedback, etc.

Besides, there are enough choices in the market today where one can get reliability AND the things that enthusiasts enjoy.

It's the job of the marketers to make people want the car by injecting the catch phrases like "passion", "state of the art", "technology", "perfection" in your subconscious. It's an elaborate scheme of bringing out an emotional connection to a brand. This is what you typically see in "automotive fans".

At the end of the day, it is a business, a car business. Shareholders, profits, quarters, dividends all make the bottom line. They would not be building cars, if they did'nt make money. Simple as that.
True - it's the same reason why "lux" makes such as Mercedes or Lexus don't advertise their sales as sales or clearances and instead, refer to them as "the Summer Event" or some other advertising lingo - but basically, it's all the same.

I seem to recall that's what Toyota, er, Lexus did w/ the S Class (attacked by the LS), the 5 Series (attacked by the GS) and the 3 Series (attacked by the IS) - lol.

Get real - do you think the average auto consumer knows or even cares about this stuff?

And how do you know that Hyundai didn't do this?

(If you knew anything that went into developing the Genesis, they did).

Hmmm - let's see, Hyundai delayed the shipping of the Genesis in white since they weren't satisfied w/ how the white paint matched on metal and plastic.

Hyundai is only one of 4 auto makers to design and build in-house their own 6 spd auto tranny - the others are Toyota and GM/Ford thru a joint-venture.

The Hyundai 6 spd tranny reportedly has a no. of advancements (and Hyundai has an 8 spd tranny in the works).

Uhh, the 7 Series sells b/c it has more rear passenger room than the 5 or 3 Series.

And Hyundai is hardly the only auto manufacturer to make comparisons w/ the lux makes (it's called smart marketing).
