I would stay away from the Range Rover, especially those years (pre-03) as a daily driver.
I know what you are thinking, you see my sig and see that I just bought one. Yes, I did, but it is my second car and it is under full warranty. I almost bought a 2000 before my X5, but the dealer couldn't get the air suspension to work, so he could not sell it to me.
I think they are beautiful cars and recently, they have improved the quality, but way too many moving parts to use an older model as a daily. You'd just be mad in the end because you would still have to use your GS to get around while you fix the Range.

my buddy is a range rover certified mechanic in memphis. even though he drives ones (he got it from the insurance company for like 9000 cause the motor blew back in 2004 on a 2003 model and purchased a NEW oem motor 7000 and put it together for like 16000) he still hates it but taked the kids out in it. he gets like 8 miles to a gallon.
range rover/land rover are crap but look nice

*I ACTUALLY HAVE A RANGE ROVER* (not under any warranty for the record)
You do want the BWM designed one; that's the 03 - 05. (after that you're messing with some Ford influence)
Things to note are: it's an extremely capable vehicle and as such there are a few things you need to keep in mind when you're using it. You shouldn't really thrash on it for a start.
As for the 'unreliable' fog around them, keep in mind that consumer reports are measuring ALL Land Rovers (including the LR2, LR3, Discovery, all of them), if you're going after the top notch Range Rover you can expect something better. The LR2/3/Disco are watered down and as such (due to price point marketing) have to be cheaper somehow.
I would be a little iffy on the last gen RR only because they were still very English at that point, though I know some people with the last gen and they're quite happy with them; if you want one, get an 03+.
Luxury1 will hopefully add something here too. As well as ... who else? some1 else just got one as well (Mbenz528i: but now I see that he weighed in as a negative vote) ... but I think we're all in the 03+ group.
Lasty, you want to find some1 who is certified to service your Rover that hopefully isn't your Rover dealership.
edit: Mbenz528i ... you aren't happy w. your Rover? Why not?

ok im not going to get a range after reading this. I do want a bigger suv. I was thinking of a ford expedition. I know most people on here dont like ford, but i have had nothing but good luck from ford. jUst expedition isnt really luxurious to me. I dont know if I really like the styling of lexus lx. I like rx better, but a little small. not to mention i want something in the 6000 dollar range and lx is way more than that. I agree I would feel way more comfortable with lexus or toyota.

For the Record, I LOVE MY RANGE ROVER. There is nothing like it on the road and I think I will always have one. Sure I have only had mine for a few weeks now, but I just love driving it.
My post may not have been clear. I would not get a previous generation (P38)Range Rover (pre-03). I love the MKIII BMW built Range Rovers, which is why I bought one.
They are very capable on and off road vehicles, but for what PITMANNR200 wanted, was a P38 as a daily driver. Honestly, they cost a lot to fix and tend to have a lot of things that need fixing more often than a Lexus would.
Verdict: LOVE my Range Rove, trust it enough that I will carry my new twin kids in it, but if I only had one car, but it is also a new generation.
